Does anyone else think it's really sad that there are so many people who cannot spell and/or use proper grammar? I mean, I can understand a few errors, but some of the questions on here look like a drunk 4 year old typed them out. Is it just me, or are people getting dumber by the minute? It's really sad. Is spelling class not offered in grade school anymore?

You know I heard a news report that says children are losing their penmenship because of computers, they are SO used to typing everything out that it becomes unimportant to practice and use handwriting skills, which I think is a shame, I mean too many people have bad handwriting despite being taught how, then you put on top that children aren't being taught to have good penmenship??? I'm a stickler and teach my children how to write clearly and precisely, so they will have neat handwriting growing up, because to this day I still think it's nice to get a handwritten letter and not always just emails. Yeah, I notice a LOT of people with terrible grammar and spelling capabilities, it's shameful, but the only thing I can think of is more and more people are getting access to the internet, it's not just wealthy (and most likely well educated) people who can afford to get online and speak their mind on the internet. Not that I'm saying poor people aren't educated enough to spell and write correctly, more that the internet and computer programs have become so dumbed down that ANY idiot can work a computer and get on the internet. I think a lot of people just don't CARE about proper grammar and spelling. Which just goes to show what type of person they are, I tend not to put too much into people who answer my questions and can't spell or write correctly, and I usually don't answer questions of people who's grammar errors are so great I don't even understand what the question is, or if there even IS a question! I think the computer programs are being brought down to dumb level, so people don't have to be educated to use them, so why educate themselves? Anyway, no you're not the only person to notice things like that!

I have plenty of students who can spell just fine, but who cannot do any mathematicsor science. There are a lot of things to learn in this complex society. Most spelling problems can be solved if people would just use the spell checker available on their word processor. So I am not as concerned about spelling when many of the good spellers think the Garden of Eden is a fact and Darwin was/is wrong. Now that is a serious problem when student's education is compromised by their backward religion.

Yeah, people are too dumb to grasp English anymore. Even the English as their first language speakers can't seem to understand it. People are actually pushing for a phonetic written language. I don't have a link, but it was in the news a couple of days ago. The language would look like the questions 60-75 percent of the people post on here.

Where is the charm? I ask. Where is the charm in reading, "Soe wuts yer name? N howe doo yoo like mie avatar?"

All this is just backwards logic. Why should the high intellects, or at the very least the people who know how to spell and write, be forced to come down to some moron's level because said moron can't effing learn to read and write?

Studies have revealed that the typical American public school system has crumbled since the 1980's. If I didn't supplement my children, they would be functionally illiterate today. These days many people are living paycheck to paycheck to survive.I believe most parents do care The schools are not fairly funded.High School is just a place to acquire an attendance record. There is no simple answer. If nothing else read to a child 10-20 minutes everyday. It does make a difference. It sparks the joy and motivation for learning. Have a great day.

Wireless text messaging and Instant Messaging is destroying English and spelling. Many are going for speed and made up abbreviations rather than clear communication. It is becoming so acceptable, they either don't realize how poor they communicate or they no longer take the time.

As for the English as a second language argument, most have the basics of writing and spelling. I am not sure they would understand it well enough to start using all these short cut words.

I think it's really sad that you're judging so many people and making such assumptions. Has it not occurred to you that some people may not be able to grasp the English language too well because it's NOT their first language? Or that some people may have learning disabilities? Or that in some schools, it's like the blind leading the blind when it comes to grammar?

Good God, like YOU are one to talk, look at one of your questions:
"Does anyone remember the Dru Sjodin case? The young woman from North Dakota who was kidnapped in the mall parking lot and months later found dead?"
That was the beginning of the details of your question and your second "sentence" isn't a sentence, it's a sentence fragment.

I know exactly what you're talking about. It really bunches my shorts. I absolutely hate it when people use "then" when they really should be using "than". I also hate it when people use "your" when a "you're" is required. I really do think that people are getting dumber. It's very sad. The problem is, teachers don't know how to spell and/or don't enforce proper spelling and grammar. I always had to help my English teacher out. He always asked me how to spell sh1t. Heh, I'm angry now.

Part of it is that spelling like a drunken 4 year-old has become much more socially acceptable than it used to be. If I had to venture a guess, I would say that the internet has a whooole heck of a lot to do with it. Unfortunately, it bleeds into other areas where spelling that way should never be acceptable, like on papers my college students have turned in to me in the classes for which I have TAed.

(PS--LOVE the drunk 4 year-old analogy!! XD)

people these days are not taking advantage of learning and knowledge. Technology has a lot to do with it. A simple spell check can save people from making honest mistakes. It is also a form of laziness. With all the jargon that is present, people feel you will understand what they write, no matter how it looks. It is really sad....but there is not much that can be done for people's unwillingness to communicate properly.

Schooling or not, people have their own way of "doing" things! Whether it's spelling, sowing their garden, working in their kitchen or painting their fence around their yard. There are too many people that don't care what other people think and there are so many abbreviations, have you talked on msn or yahoo lately, tons!!!!! It's not that they can't spell, some actually apologize for it because they r upset, they just abbr. alot!
