Absolutely. There are times when it's ok for us step outside our roles and just be people, with problems and hurt and a need for comfort.

Yes, but it's always good ask first, "Do you want a hug?"
If you are the student who offered a hug, you did absolutely the right thing and you are a wonderful person.
I've taught high school for 32 years and it happened to me once. I had to announce the death of one of our teachers and I started to cry. I couldn't stop. I just sat there and sobbed. The nicest girl in the class came up to comfort me with a big hug. I told the class that we've done a lot together: study, fix food, play--so there's no big thing to tears. Nothing bad happend to me afterward. There were no insults. It didn't matter that we didn't get much studying done that day. For me it was more important for a man not to be afraid to show feeling.

Hi Beegone - sounds good to me. A hand on the shoulder is also a form of comforting, while asking, "Is there anything I can do to help?" Good for you. Your teachers are lucky to have such a caring student.

The student should probably ask if it's okay first. The teacher shouldn't be expressing personal emotions in front of his or her students.

First the teacher should not do so, infront of his/her students. Ans if it is, student can ask him the reason, and try to make him normal by using good pharases. But to give hug is not a good attitued.

I think it would be better to ask her if she is ok first.... before you do anything, it depends in which country you live in, if its the states, and if the wrong person see's it, it can cause a problem for the teacher..

I think that is perfectly okay. I think it's very nice of you to care about your teacher.
