The laptop was recovered and the former employee is suing the VA for his job. He was just doing what his employers told him to do, supposedly. This is not the work of "one ignorant person", it is the culmination of a whole lax organization.
There is no evidence that the thief had any idea of what he had. Veterans are advised to be mindful of their credit ratings and to report anything they consider suspicious.
Changes have already been made within the VA to make sure that anyone with access to any personal information of the vets are properly educated.

The employee didn't steal it. It was stolen from their house. Came out a couple months ago they were authoriized to take it out of the office. Laptop was returned. My question is WHY was the employee allowed to take the info out of the office.
VA's a jacked up organization. The DMV can make civilians wait in line forever & fill out all kinds of paperwork till they say screw at just go home, but after some military beraucracy it takes a special kind of evil to make vets go home before they're done. I guess it'll stay that way till one of us gets elected, scraps the whole thing, and starts over to make a good system.

They found the laptop that was stolen. None of the information was tampered with as far as they can see.
But the person who took it out of the VA offices without clearence and left it in their car was fired and will probably face some kind of misappropriation charges.
My info was in that laptop too!! I was really hot about it.

Yes, he got caught 4 weeks ago, and didn't know the info he had, no ex-military info was published, or given away by him. We are safe that way. No worries. He was put into a mental fascillity in the New England area somewher, the authorities wouldn't say exactly where. Thanks for you question, I was a little worried about my bank account. Ron
