Read Brain Allergies by William Philpott. Read about B vitamins and St. Johns Wort. That should be a start.

For depression that has lasted some time, your best bet is a combination of therapy and anti depressants. IGNORE all the people on this site who have responded to your question by telling you not to take medication - half of them also admit to never having tried them, so they can't give you an informed answer. For severe depression, and also anxiety, anti depressants can make a real difference. That said, it can be tricky finding the right one, and many people have to try a few. You need to speak to a specialist; get your doctor to refer you. Nobody can tell you which specific medicine will work best for you - individual responses to all these medications vary tremendously, so to a certain extent, it's trial and error! If you'd prefer to try more 'natural' methods, then try homeopathy or a course of chinese herbs. Be warned that the latter are very powerful and you must go to a reputable chain; in the UK, Herbal Inn seem good. And never mix either homeopathy, chinese herbs, or St John's Wort with anti depressants.

Be careful with herbs they can have side effects you don't want. Be sure to do the research. I have found homeopathic medication that help for anxiety. Try Hyland's Calms, get it at a nutrition store or organic grocery.

You really ought to check out support groups, too. I got a lot of help from Recovery, Inc. They teach you tools you can use to reduce the symptoms to a manageable level. It really does help a lot! It's kind of a cognitive therapy with their own language. Check your local paper for meetings in your area.

My doctor recommended St. John's Wort for me. It worked fairly well for many years.
