I've seen budgie prices as low as $5-10 from a local breeder, upwards of $200 - $1000 for show birds and birds with specialized colors and feather types. Most birds, however, will cost you about $40 - $70 for a pair. Again, this depends on where you get it and the quality of the bird. Most pet shops where I live (Manitoba, Canada) sell their birds about $20 - $25 each.
If you don't have the cage and food bowls, etc, expect to pay around $100 - $200 for everything. You can get cages and most cage accessories at decent prices if you can find a used pet supply store. I found a $180 cage for $60! It was used and had a minor crack, but it's held up for a good 4 years and several clutches. At my local used pet store, I can find used bowls and crocks for .99 cents. You just need to clean them good when you bring them home because you don't know why the cage and bowls were brought to the store. Soaking the cage and bowls in Lysol for 10 minutes usually does the trick :-) .
Good luck !

i think it depends on where you buy the parakeet. I bought a parakeet at a pet store for about $11

If you get it from a place like PetSmart one should cost like $20 to $30. But if you are going to purchase one from a breeder or a store that breeds and hand-feeds their baby birds the price will go up. You need to decide how much you are willing to spend and how important the breeding quality of the bird is to you. Once you know that, look around at local stores and breeders to pick the right birds for you.

It cost me about $20 for one parakeet and more for the cage (you need a large one so they can stretch out their wings and move around)

The parakeets themselves will run from $10.00 up to $39.99. Cages could cost anywhere from $30.00 to $100.00 and food will cost about $10.00. Including toys and other treats the total cost will run between $80.00 and $200.00.

well, just the parakeet himself? 20 bucks a pop, or if you get them on sale at petco(which they occasionally put them on sale for a week), ten bucks a pop. you will have to get them other things-like a cage, toys, perches, food, ect.
