Unfortunately the only 100% sure way of knowing is to get your Rainbow DNA sexed. Most countries have a national lab where you can send blood or feather samples. You pluck 2 or three chest feathers or cut a nail too short and deposit the blood drops on a special lab card. In a few days you get a certificate back saying if your bird is male or female. It's usually cheap - most places charge no more than $20 for the test. The other way is to wait for your bird to lay an egg. ^.^ .

BTW... to get the lab card, just email or phone the lab. When you send the blood, you send the payment. Most tests take 3-4 days to get a result.

If it lays an egg, it's a girl.
If it's alone in the cage with a lory that lays an egg, and the egg hatches, it's a boy.
An experience breeder can tell at a glance. A lory breeder saw my male rainbow lorikeet at a bird club meeting (he was the speaker)(the guy, not my bird!) and he said to everyone "come and look at this prime specimen of male rainbow lory" without even asking me the bird's sex.
The easiest way is with a blood test. The vet snips a blood feather and sends it in and you get a lovely little certificate back from Zoogen. See below.

There is no visible difference between a male and female Rainbow Lorikeet. If you handle him/her feel in the bottom third of the birds body, in front. If there seems to be only one central bone running down the center of it's body, this would indicate that you have a male. If there is not a central bone, but two bones, spread a little to each side, this would indicate that you have a female. This is because of the female's reproductive system.

I will pass on to you what i was told as i have one myself. I met a couple who had two one was male and the other female i asked how they knew as i had one . The male will learn to talk more than the female the female seems to do all the bird talk and the male in time will learn human chat and sound effects. so it looks like i have a male which is cool and yes he is a character he loves to imitate.

A good vet. The females pelvic bone is wilder.
