There are all kinds of private schools and all kinds of students who go to them. You are someone whose parents cared enough about your education for them to pay to make sure you got a good one. That may make you lucky, but it doesn't mean you're a prep or a snob.

Preppy has multiple meanings:

1. (Original) "Preppy" is derived from "prep school" or - in your case - private schools where most of the students are presumed to be headed for college. Using this definition, we might assume you are a preppy.

2. (social clique slang) "Preps" also come from the movie "The Outsiders" which features "preps" calling themselves the "Socs" (soashs) - kids that are probably headed for college, but form a gang to beat up on "Greasers" - kids that formed a gang that are probably not headed for college. Each group dresses a different way to better express their socioeconomic class. After the book and movie (more people watched the movie), the term "preppy" was more in use. A satirical version of the acceptance of this word showed up in the 1980's in the form of "The Preppy Handbook" which goes as far as to specify certain clothes, colleges to attend or not attend, and whatnot to further define socioeconomic class. This sort of book, however, lends the idea that there is a sliding scale of "only kind of preppy" to "extreme prep zealot."

3. (uninformed slang) "Preppy" later devolved to simply imply a certain way of dressing in certain clothing. Of course, to anyone using the first two definitions, this group could easily contain quite a few "posers" that only dress the part, but either won't or can't get into a "decent" college later on.

Posers: This poses a problem for the terminology. Some people "dress down" or pose as another social group or simply have their own style, partly in defiance of defs 2 and 3 and snobby people (yes, def 2 people are definitely snobby). This can sometimes generate some interesting situations. For example, when I was your age (Oh-my-god-I'm-old!), I was one of the first people to start dressing grunge style. I was definitely headed for colleges that most people wished they could get into (something I was oblivious to at the time), so others started dressing the same way, which freaked me out at the time. So you could say that I fit def #1, but not #2. Along comes my ex-gf, who pretty much only dressed the part of someone able to go to a good college, who then went about criticizing me for not dressing like a prep!

Later, I dated a woman in college that you can pretty much say was the Anti-Prep if you were only counting defs # 2 and 3, but definitely fit def #1.

Anyhow, I'm for not worrying about it. It's fun to play with words, but it doesn't mean much in the long run. I mean, what difference does it make now, let alone 5 years from now?

Side note: Ironically, the "official" list of "preppiest" colleges does not include Harvard or Yale or Princeton or Oberlin on account of there being a more practical reason for going to the best private schools in the world. Instead, they list mediocre private schools that barely justify the expense since showing off socioeconomic class means an excessive waste of resources - kind of like buying a Hummer.

I go to a private school, and I am nerdy but not snobby. And I'm not really preppy. I guess a little, but I tend to avoid that type of style.

A lot of people think private schools are preppy. The only reason they think that is because a lot of people have to go to public schools. A lot of public schools are lower of a class than private schools. Don't worry about what people think. If you enjoy your school, it shouldn't matter what they say. Enjoy your pride and think high of yourself. It is a privilege to attend a private school and get a high education.

It does if you transfer from a private to a public school! but if you stay in a private school where they have uniforms! and dress different with a tie or a dress! I consider that normal! But if you dress like that in a public school! people may think of you as a preppy!

no..... its an stereotype i guess....... because i went to a private school, but it wasnt an expensive one, nor a preppy one... it all depends on the student, and if you dont want to be preppy, then dont... be yourself and have your own beliefs and purpouses in life.....
i wish you the best!! bye!
