Hi! I'm an Audiologist.

As others have noted, there are several potential causes of an "Earache".

Excessive cerumen build-up in the ear can cause pain, especially if it is deep in the ear near the ear drum.

If you get an external ear infection, commonly called "Swimmers Ear", there was moisture that could not drain from the ear canal, and either bacteria or fungus has started to grow. This is also often near the eardrum and can be painful.

Sometimes pressure builds-up behind the eardrum when we have upper respiratory ailments, like allergies or a cold. This causes the ear to feel clogged and can be very uncomfortable.

A middle ear infection is when fluid fills up the space behind the ear drum, and bacteria grows. If left untreated the pressure can cause the eardrum to rupture.

Other conditions can cause your ear to ache. And a doctor is really the only one who can properly diagnose and treat it. So I recommend consulting your doctor.

Temporary relief can be obtained with pain relievers, like ibuprofen or acetaminophen, depending what is safe for you. In addition, putting a hot water bottle against the ear can also ease some of the pain and pressure you might be feeling.

I have used a heating pad before, by laying my head on it(the side with the sore ear) and if there was a wax build up in my ear, it would slowly warm up and oze out, and boy did it feel 100% better. But it just depends on what is wrong, but hey, you could still try that, it won't cost you or hurt you. good luck. the only SAFE way is to take some ibuprofen and make an appointment with your doctor. Most at-home treatments can make it worse if the pain is caused by an ear infection, so it's not work risking it.

Heat up vegetable oil in the microwave so it's warm. Soak a cotton ball in the oil and place it in the ear. That should help. My mom had me do that several times when I was a kid and it always worked.

Drug stores sell remedies, but I have found with my daughter it is better to have it looked at by a doctor before you put drops or anything in it. The drops will cover up any infection the doctor is looking for. He will also probably prescribe an antibiotic, to take by mouth. Heat also helps.
