What Bible thumpers fear most are people who are educated enough in the subject to be able to point out all the lies and inconsistancies of said book.

I read Misquoting Jesus from cover to cover. Truthfully, at the time I read this, I was unaware of his faith, and assumed him to be Christian.
He does explain some errors and the potential of scribes to have made plenty of mistakes over thousands of years. However, as a Christian reading every word of this heavily worded, dry book, I came to the realization that he is right...I can definitely see scribes making gramtical and translation errors as is only human. However, nothing scared me in his findings. Bible college has been teaching for years that the story of Jesus and the adulterer was most likely added to the Bible and not origianlly part of the text. The rest of it is nonsense.
One view was the Jesus was angry when he healed a leper and the other was that he was compassionate when he did so. I read it and dont see anger or frustration at all/ Even assuming that he is correct and Jesus was angry, then he was most likely BOTH angry and compassionate (he ultimately heals the leper)at the same time. Basically a lot of other examples that didnt shake my faith at all. He def does not give a strong enough argument to challenge I John , or the resurrection. The book was interesting, but this article in the washington post exaggerates on that considerbly (mostly because most people will only read the article and are too lazy read that whole book )
But it is STILL all a matter or perspective. He hasnt PROVED anything and actually showed me how amazing and divine the Bible actually is to stand the test of all this time, and remain intact almost completely with the exception of very few fundamental errors. (I am excluding grammer and translation errors that hadnt proved to be significant, in my opinion)

what a sad sack. i can't believe they still let him teach. Anyone can fall away. Seems like he listened to the wrong spirit.
bible thumpers don't base their faith on other's faith. They base it on the Person of Jesus. This guy lost confidence in the authenticity of Jesus' testimony. Did he think all those followers gave their lives in vain for a fantasy? we're not talking about the ones who just had stories passed down. I mean the apostles who were eye witnesses.

Yes, we know about him. If I am not mistaken, Phillip Yancey (editor, "Christianity Today" magazine) either interviewed him, or several people like him, for an article and a book. This is nothing new.
What do atheists fear most? An atheist who reluctantly admitted that there was a God? ;-)
From "Wikipedia", the free encyclopedia:
.............................................
...Although raised in a churchgoing family in the Church of Ireland, [C. S.] Lewis was an atheist for much of his youth. His separation from Christianity began when he started to view his religion as a chore and as a duty ...
...Influenced by arguments with his Oxford colleague and Roman Catholic friend J. R. R. Tolkien, and by G.K. Chesterton's book, The Everlasting Man, he slowly rediscovered Christianity. In 1929, he came to believe in the existence of God although he fought greatly against it. He describes his last struggle in Surprised by Joy:
"You must picture me alone in that room in Magdalen, night after night, feeling, whenever my mind lifted even for a second from my work, the steady, unrelenting approach of Him whom I so earnestly desired not to meet. That which I greatly feared had at last come upon me. In the Trinity Term of 1929 I gave in, and admitted that God was God, and knelt and prayed: perhaps, that night, the most dejected and reluctant convert in all England."
In 1931, after a lengthy discussion with Tolkien and another close friend, Hugo Dyson, he reconverted to Christianity and (to the regret of Tolkien) joined the Church of England. He noted, "I came into Christianity kicking and screaming."

Bible thumpers greatest fears include but are not limited to: truth (like the truth that god does not exist or how if you statistically analyze prayer it doesn't do anything), logic (like how the bible contradicts itsself many many times.), equality (like marriages for gay people), happiness in the life of anyone that is not a bible thumper, civil rights (abortion, gay marriage, believing anything unrelated to bible thumpers or their bible thumping etc.), the advancement of science (stem cell research, further research into abiogenesis and the origins of life) evolution, stem cell research, anything entertaining and of course their greatest fear is losing money.

Ohhhhhhh..
so because he has a Ph D and a college education and he lost his faith then I guess that's is it then. what ever dude,
some of the most intelligent people are the most lost. They are so full of themselves that if they cannot explain it then it must not exist. pretty egotistical if you ask me.
and was that a question?
why are you on this part of the site anyway, to bash Christians?

by "bible thumpers" i'm assuming you mean those who believe in & follow the bible. my experience has been that their biggest fear is fear of the Lord (though this is more reverence & awe of an all-consuming Holy Being than a cower in the corner type fear)

I would be one classified as a BIBLE THUMPER (and I proudly say that ... lol) What I fear most would be:
Unbelievers continuing to harden their heart to God, and continue to attempt to dis-credit him.
I fear this, because I know what it says in my Bible... I'm concerned for these people.
Sincerely yours,
PROUD BIBLE THUMPER! lol
