Rainforests are very important as they are a part of the global weather system. Destroying all the rainforests will affect the water cycle, causing soil erosion, drought and flooding. During photosynthesis, trees take in carbon dioxide and give out oxygen. Thus, trees are also known as the lungs of the earth, purifying the air by removing carbon dioxide and providing oxygen.

Rainforests help to prevent the Greenhouse Effect. If there are no forests, the Earth's temperature will be very high. Hence, trees help to keep tropical countries cool.

Many people are living in urban towns with stressful lifestyles and the rainforests allow people to relax in the calm, green surrounding. The trees also make area an attractive Green Place to visit.

The rainforests in Tropical Countries are 'living' educational museums of plant and animal species which we can learn about during our outdoor Science and Social Studies lessons.

Finally, some plants have extremely valuable medical properties. The only known cure for certain diseases come from certain species of trees found in the rainforests. Already half of the Earth's rainforests have already been destroyed, plants have or are becoming extinct even before they are discovered!.

You heard wrong. A majority of the oxygen comes from the plant life in the ocean. Think about it. How big are the oceans, how spread out are they around the world. Now, the rain forest. Located in one area. Yeah, I'm sure someone half way around the world is always near suffocation, waiting for the oxygen generated by the rain forest to reach them. Ahem. And let's not forget about all the forests / grass and other plants thriving all over the land as well. Next time, try to think and use some common sense.

Yes, but the world would be a much poorer place without the rainforest. Most of our oxygen comes from splitting water molecules during photosynthesis. The largest biomass of photosynthetic organisms is in the oceans.

Almost all of our oxygen comes from the ocean (algae). The rainforest is still important for other reasons, though.

No one should be making you feel bad for asking this question--a LOT of people think that.

Jenni.... All the time when we think of forests and plants ppl relate it wt oxygen... but there are many other things that rainforest provide us to carry on our life. Like they provide water in those area where we cannot get it through oceans..think of hilly areas... These help in raining and that makes the water lable increase in plains. Forests are important to hold soil and if it will not there, leathal conditions like flooding, drought, rise in water lable of seas due to accumulation of sand in seas to cause nearby land merged in water... these all can happen... i must say forests are neccesary for survival..atleast for land animals.

Well I looked this up on Yahoo and I am surprised to learn the following...
algae provides better photosynthesis than any plant we know of
( 90 percent of our Earth's oxygen supply comes collectively from algae )
...so I learned from your question

thanks.

I've heard that 70% of our needs in oxygen are provided by the oceanic florea seaweed, sea-plants. but who yaa gonna beleive nowadays huh? Even scientists are corrupt. I mean, to KEEp their job they usually have to prove what they're TOLD to.....even when it's false...

Nope. We all need eachother- plants, incests and all. It's called the ecosystem. You remove one element and everything is off balanced and becomes helter skelter.
