IF you get "100 percent combed egyptian cotton" you can go as low as 250-275. I have some from target that are softer and smoother and breathe better than my 600s. My trick is to unzip the corner of the bag (they're usually strapped shut, so just a 1/2 inch), and slide my finger in and out of the folds of the fabric to see how they feel.

At least 400 but 600 is better, but heavier. IF you look online and sales at places like Tuesday Morning. Just watch for sales because places like Target and Macy's all carry them at a reasonable price if you watch the ads.

For $89.00, you can get an incredible set of Beech Sateen sheets from Bed, Bath and Beyond. My friends and family are all sure we'll never buy anything else ever! (Don't get fooled by the Beech jersey-they do not wash well)

I HAVE GOTTEN 6-700 COUNT AT `TUESDAY MORNINGS` STORE ON SALE, $70 FOR KING SETS, VERY REASONABLE I THOUGHT. ALSO, KOHL'S ON SALE. THE HIGH COUNT IS BEST FOR SOFTNESS. I GOT KING SIZE SETS FOR $26 AT KOHL'S ON CLEARANCE, WAS SURPRISED THEY WERE SO NICE AND LAST A LONG TIME. I WOULDNT BUY ANYTHING LESS THAN 600. I AGREE TJMAX IS GOOD, TOO.
