I'm guessing that when you say "settle" you are thinking of calling the credit card companies and asking for a cut in the interest. If you call the companies they will reason with you and cut the interest but they will also close your account and will not let you ever re-open that account or start another one with them.
If you are saying you paid your bills and your credit report still has the inaccuracies, then you need to write the credit reporting agencies and show them proof of payment. They will contact the place you had the bill with (and paid it) and get their opinion. If they agree your proof is sufficient that item will be removed from your credit report. If not, then you can write them thru the BBB (Better Business Bureau) to ask why they have refused you and they must reply with their reason. There are further steps to take if they balk, but seems to me at this point the problem will have been cleared up.

By saying the word "settle", I assume you have some debts or judgments outstanding that you want to clear up. The thing to do is get a copy of your credit report and credit score BEFORE you speak to anybody. If there are errors, register the errors immediately. If you have debts, as long as they are reasonable, you can ask the lender to roll them into your mortgage. A lot of mortgage brokers as well as lending institutions are becoming more competitive these days with mortgages. I was very surprised when I learned some of my own clients were able to secure mortgages ... basically, it is their current debt load, regular income and credit rating they look at ... and they figure out based on this how much house you can afford (with any downpayment, if available). Posted mortgage rates are also negotiable as well, so just don't judge by posted rates.

Don't feel wierd, it's completely normal. Nobody really has perfect credit. When you write the letter tell them the truth about what you are trying to do. An actual human being is going to read the letter you write, so appeal to their better nature. Also, you should consider going to one of the big three credit bureaus and refuting some of the claims on your report. Companies generally have thirty days to prove a claim before it gets dropped. This answer is all opinion and partially fact.

Depending on how old the debt is they may be willing to settle. If they do decide to settle for like 50% off or something like that definitely get it in writing and once it's paid get a "Zero balance" or "Paid in Full" letter from the company( on company letterhead) because your payment to them may not be updated in time for settlement so that will be your proof that the debt is satisfied.

as quickly as I googled it, I have been given debt contract and credit fix corporation -- neither equals 'believe' and typicall are scams. Debt contract agencies take your money and enable all your money owed circulate ninety days late. Then they supply lowball contract. maximum credit card agencies refuse to play and could immediately sue you. The contract corporation isn't assisting you out with that courtroom case. credit fix agencies are even worse. they are able to do genuinely no longer something which you won't be able to truly do for your self. there is so secret letter or magic want to do away with valid weak credit.
