I am getting a tattoo soon, and I am getting the words "Ocean Spirit" tattooed in spanish but, I want to know the proper translation for it, because several different sites, and several different people have been telling me SEVERAL different versions.
I think it's "Espiritu Del Oceano" but what does "Del" mean? Espiritu means Spirit and Oceano means Ocean, so what is Del? Is it it not grammatically correct? I don't want my tattoo to say something that it's not supposed too... does anyone speak spanish?

Espiritu del Oceano is saying spirit of the ocean or spirit from the ocean. I would ask a college professor that teaches spanish to translate it for you in the proper spanish. I speak spanish but I talk tex-mex. There is proper spanish. good luck

As someone who speaks a good bit of Spanish, has several tattoos, and is going to get her first words tattooed on her in about a month (those words being in Spanish), I'm going to have to second the others who are saying don't get a tattoo on you in a language you don't understand. Mostly because words--more than images, in my opinion--in tattoos need to be there because they mean something to you personally. Why don't you just get "Ocean Spirit"? It probably means a whole lot more to you than "Espíritu del Océano" and you'll absolutely know if it's right or wrong, you won't have to rely on anyone to tell you it's right or wrong. Plus, if it's in English, you can play around with the spelling or style or something to make it personal without worrying about changing the meaning.

Ok, but if you HAVE to get this, "Del" means "of the." It's a contraction of "de" and "el." In Spanish, you can't really say "Ocean Spirit" in that order, you need to say "Spirit of the Ocean" or it won't make sense. Also, in titles in Spanish (or really any capitalized phrase), you would usually only capitalize the first word: Espíritu del océano. If you really want to capitalize "Océano," then ok, but don't capitalize "del," it just looks kind of funny--as if you had written, "Spirit Of The Ocean," which looks very funny in English.

It's grammatically correct. "Del" is a contraction of "de" ("of") and "el" ("the"). "Espiritu del oceano" is the absolute best way to translate it since Spanish doesn't have word orders like English to where "Ocean" would come before "Spirit".

I think "del" means "of" or "of the," so it would be "spirit of the ocean." I agree with Amy, though--why have something tattooed on your body in a language you don't even speak? It would be a shame if you got the words wrong and had to have it changed. That would be an expensive mistake!

I think the phrace has accents in it somewhere but not sure...haven't taken spanish in a while. Del is "of the" while De is just "of" but the other two look okay. If you want it to be correct though, you have to make sure if it has accents or not.

technically thats not correct Del in that context would mean "of the" So it's "Spirit of the Ocean" not Ocean Spirit although they mean the same thing

Other than giving the police an easy way to ID the body and giving yourself a chance at hepatitis and other things why do you want to make a permanent drawing on your body that in 5 years will start to sag and the colors bleed until the words just look like a muddy blue caterpillar on your body?

Espíritu del océano (with accents)=Spirit from the ocean. If you don't want to put "del" it's gonna say "Espíritu océano" which in Spanish, doesn't make sense.
