OH MY GOD. Why are you even considering NOT PUTTING HIM DOWN.
Hi, I am an animal love, vegetarian and PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals)
and I understand that you LOVE your dog, but that's WHY you should not want to see him hurt anymore. He is obviously old and sick. Let him move on, he loves you as well but letting him sit and become more and more ill, until he dies a horribly painful, slow death IS NOT THE WAY TO GO.
Having been with him for 5 years, think about all he has done for you. You said you tell him everything, well tell him you love him so much and that he is your best friend no matter what and you just want his pain to go away. Then take him to the Vet and hold his paw and pet him telling him hes a good boy and let him go. Don't make him hurt because you need him here, think about whats best for him. If you were him wouldn't you want him to do the same for you, or would you want to walk around in pain all day?
Good Luck. I know its hard, I have been there 3 times and it sucks, But i know that in the end they didn't suffer it was painless and easy. You love him and he loves you. Make the right choice. Show him that you really care.
Peace. Love. Hope.

What did the vet say was causing these symptoms? You should get a second opinion and get the details of what is wrong with your dog and what if anything could help. There are treatments for constipation, different foods can be offered if dogs refuse to eat, and you need to know the exact cause of the limp. Was he injured? Hip dysplasia and arthritis can be managed, either through surgery, supplements, or medication. Of course age and the actual diagnosis factor a lot into whether you should have him put down, if his quality of life is poor and there is no hope for recovery that would be the humane thing to do. I just reccommend that you find out more about what's wrong with him before having to make such a gut wrenching decision. Sorry about your situation, good luck with him.

First off, I am so sorry.
You know your dog best...if the quality of life is not what it should be - then perhaps yes. I do not know what is wrong with your dog...so it is hard to say. It depends on the condition, prognosis, if you are treating the dog - and most importantly, if he is in pain!! But keep in mind he is not eating...
I would make a list of his favorite things - things he really likes to do, eat...keep track of if he still enjoys doing those things anymore - cross them out if he does not. If most or all of those things can be crossed off the list, it might be time.
Don't do it just because you do not want to deal with a problem that could be managed; and don't wait too long if he is truly suffering and has no quality of life - some people hang on way too long - and they do it for themselves because they cannot imagine their life without their pet.
If you do decide to put him to sleep - stay with him if you at all can - you will not regret it. He knows you and it will be comforting to him that you are there. It is a personal decision - but I have seen many people regret not being there, and they always wonder if they should have stayed...
There is a site on grief attached when and if you need it - it is your decision, and you know your dog - so you will make the right choice. You will know when it is time. Trust yourself.

Aaawww, that's so sad! I'm sorry this is happening to you and your dog. Gosh, this is such a personal decision. I don't know if I could stand to see my dog in a state of constant pain and suffering, but at the same time - I see your point. Depending on the dog's condition, I would have to go with the vet's recommendation. I feel bad for you though, because it's so hard to let your best friend go. I know it's hard....just make the best decision for yourself and your dog.

Try getting a 2nd opinion from another vet first. What was your dogs medical condition that the vet told you? If it was somthing serious that is causing your dog to die slowly, then putting your friend to rest would be best. :( Afterall, he would be suffering.
As bad as this will sound now, if it comes to that, there are millions of dogs in need of a best friend they can listen to when you have problems out there in shelters that would love to be with you. . :) Whatever happens do what your heart tells you to. :)

Did the Vet tell you what is wrong. I would get a second opinion if you have any doubt at all. I don't think its fair for the dog to suffer if he really does have a medical condition that won't get better.

Take the dog to another vet and if they say the same thing then you have to. I know it's hard but you have to for him. You are supposed to take care of him and if that means put him out of his misery than do it. But get a second opinion first cuz vets have been known to be wrong.

Do you really think the dog is going to get better or are you just wishful thinking? If you truely think it will get better, wait. If the dog is old and suffering in pain, have it put to sleep. It is never an easy decision but you have to do what is best for the dog.

It maybe hard but it is the best thing to do. You don't want your dog to be in pain and suffer. I put one of my dogs down it was hard but I believe he was much, much, better off. Then I waited about a month and I got another one. I can't live without a dog.

If your animal is in pain the kind thing to do would be to put him to sleep. You don't want someone you love to have to live in pain and suffer the embarrassment of having bathroom problems.
First, I would get a second opinion...did they do a blood check? Do they know what's wrong with him? Have you thought of arthritis medicine? Did they do an x-ray? I would work on finding out more about his condition, if nothing else to ease your mind.
