Portrayed by movies and media, America is one big greasy ball of Rap, Fast food, and expensive luxuries such as cars. Where did their good 'ol American ways go?
I'm not exactly the most patriotic person, but while living here I think it's healthy to wonder about the culture.
There is no single definition for American culture, which of course is a wide blend now-a-days anyway, but seriously.. Even Canada and England (which are countries very much like USA) have definitions of their culture.
Uncle Sam.. what happened, man?

I just wanted to say, to those people assuming I'm FROM USA, I'm Croatian and living here.
And yes greg r, I've been to NY, NYC, NJ, PA, MD, VA, FL, OH, ME.
Also, I don't have an MP3 player. I have two jobs, and I go to college.
That should help with your answers a little, because I still don't see one answering me.. Just criticizing me. Sorry.. Impress me.

You answered your own question. United States' culture has gone the way of, "movies and media, America is one big greasy ball of Rap, Fast food, and expensive luxuries such as cars." Sad but true. Of course, it really depends on what part of the country you go to as well. The farther away you get from big cities, the closer you get to actual "American Pie Culture." There are still a few communities that are 50 years behind the times, and they love it.

America does have a "culture" MORE THAN YOU C AN SEE OR EXPERIENCE\
Why does it look that way to you, your definition of culture may be so differnet than others,
It has taken so many immigrants, and then down the line families, and so much progress, to cover up some of the virtue that America is about,
If america is without culture, it is very busy getting millions who want to be a part of it,
sure the media, wild crazy, sometimes "sick" BUT THAT IS A SIGN OF THE TIMES, which are much better for some and others not so good,
Try adding to america and start a "give America some culture" BLOGS,
AND THEN MAKE SOME CULTURE,,

So you have never been to New York City, San Francisco, old New Orleans, Los Angeles, Chicago, Las Vegas ( ok, LV is a little tacky ), or anywhere else outside of Bumfuck, Idaho? Or you haven't gone to Stanford, Princeton, Harvard, Brown or UCLA? You haven't been to the Getty Museum, The Met, The Chandler, Broadway? You know darlin', maybe you need to put down your ipod or MP3, unplug the cell phones in your ears, stop reading Cosmo and open your eyes. If America has no culture, it is because you can't go to the mall and buy it in the little misses department or the nail boutique. Grow up and actually do something instead of waiting for it to happen.

Are you serious? You're arguing there's no 'high culture' cause everythign you just described is culture.
You want US culture?
Modern movies (not to mention the art of kids films and animation), jazz, blues, rock & roll, our sports, style (we invented the blue jeans and baseball cap), musicals, bbq, burgers, franchises and big business, big box stores and oversized cars.
If you want england and their tea drinking bad food and warm beer culture or Canada with their hockey and salmon wrestling, then be my guest

what exactly are these good old american ways that you speak of? most people in this country try to hold on to the culture of their home countries, the places where their ancestors are from. ideally everyone should accept each other's different ways. this is why its so funny and ironic when people tell others to go back to their own country.

Wait... Jazz, Theater, Literature, Film.. Education... there's more.
No one is more disenchanted by the current state of affairs ... but culture ? There's still plenty !!!!
PS.... I won't deny television has left a huge dent in our collective conscious ... but not even all of that is bad, how about a glass that's 1/4 full ?

there is no single homogenous culture, but many based on diverse ethnic backgrounds--hang with ethnic types you like. the few elements of homogeneity appear to be, generally, hyper- materialism, no attention span, a penchant for violence, and competitveness. not a pretty picture.
