For many years, I jumped all over the place - basing myself primarily out of Sobe, but living in many other places in between.
At one point, I did make the jump from Miami to NY then back again. In fact, when I first moved to Miami it was supposed to only be for a vacation but I decided to stay!
There are many opportunities for work, but it depends what kind of work you are talking about.
The obvious choice is club/bar work. If you have experience in a big city doing something like that or are very good looking, it will be no problem for you. I am speaking of Sobe. As for Miami proper, I can't say for sure how the job market is with traditional jobs, but I definitely think you should go for it.
You can either prepare and have it all set out or you can just jump in and see where it takes you.
I personally prefer the latter choice.
Also, apartments are very easy to find on short notice and or for short term stays.
There are many month to month apartments, but I would advise against staying in a hotel for a long period of time, as they get ridiculously expensive after a while.
I have no regrets whatsoever for doing it the way I did, but then - I'm pretty damn adventurous.
If you love change and embrace it, you will not have any regrets either.

Try to have a job lined up before you get there. When you get there find a place to live as soon as possible. It's expensive.
