Go into Explorer, C:\, right click and select properties, it should tell you. Check that requirements from the Microsoft web page before you upgrade. If you get XP get the professional edition with service pack 2 for the latest upgrades and patches. Backup your hard drive BEFORE the installation in case anything goes wrong. I would recommend a computer with a 3Ghz CPU, 1GB of ram, and 100GB hard drive. That should get you going with XP.

go to "my computer" and right click your "c: drive" or "local disc", and there should be a pie chart. with blue and pink colors, pink means free space, and blue means used, try defragmenting you hard drive before installing a new OS (operating system). good move, ME sucks terribly. it is very easy to install as long as you meet requirements.
get AVG free antivirus. or buy the better version from Grisoft. and Ad-aware for removal of spyware and adware.
