Are both to blame for the conflict, or is it one side that started and the other one defending itself? If so, who started?

No one seems to grasp the begining of the conflict. It did NOT begin a week or so ago as George Bush so stupidly and idiotically keeps repeating over and over when Hezbollah captured two Israeli solders and started firing missiles into Israel. The extremely shallow political thinking is designed to promote a very narrow view and misses the point entirely. Hezbollah is not the root cause of the current conflict, it is the actions of the Zionists and Israel over the last seven or eight decades.

The blame for all this can be laid squarely at the feet of the British, who in 1917 issued the Balfour declaration: "His Majesty's Government view with favour the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people..." This document set in motion the chain of events that brought us to the violence we see today, akmost 90 years later. in the 1920s began a massive influx of Russian and European jews into Palestine. The Zionists became more brazen over the years, especially after World War 2. In 1948 alone the jews destroyed over 400 Arab towns and villages, killing or driving the inhabitants off their lands. Thus began the hatred against the jews.

If you were to fix a logical blame for the current conflict, it would have to rest first withthe British and then with the jews, who by their own acts created the environment of hostility and violence that plagues the Middle East today. The violence against the jews is a reaction to the earlier genocide committed by Israel against the Arabs.

To I Know Nuttin ( so true ) - Why do you blame America? YOu must be french or german or something, but whatever you are, you are ignorant. Anyway, the Israelis were given there chunk of land in 1948, this pissed off the surrounding Arab mid-Eastern countries, and they have been trying to get it back ever since. Understand that Israel in 1948 was pretty much barren desert. If the Arabs weren't fighting with the Israelis, they would be fighting with each other ( just look at the history of the mid-East). You have a bunch of unsophisticated, uncultured young men with no jobs and lots of energy ( they aren't supposed to have sex, remember? ) so they have to do something and blame someone for having no meaning in their useless lives - so hence, the Zionists ( Israelis and Americans ) are the enemy. Why? We are educated, we drive Mercedes Benz, we have jobs, we have nice homes, and we take showers everyday.

I'd say %60-%40 on arab extremism. in bible days when the jews invaded canaan, or took it back or however you look at it they were doing no more than what any other nomadic warrior society did at that time. since then isreal has has to exist with people who want only to wipe it off the face of the earth, not that any extreme is good at all throughout history, even in recorded biblical times isreal has been on the recieving end. This will really end when true peace is offered and a real committment with real sacrafice to isreali security is offered from peace minded arab leaders. Remember, thats what Anwar Sadat was shot for!

Yes, I believe both are to blame for the conflict. I am Muslim and I do believe Hezbollah needs to be abolished. However, I do think it is Israel's fault for the mounting violence that has erupted. It was disproportionate to what occurred. Hezbollah capture two Israeli soldiers, but that was it. I don't condone the kidnapping, but no death was involved. Israel responded with air bombs, raid, gueralla tactics...

I hate that America tends to focus on the two bombs that dropped in Israel and killed 8 people (There deaths are regrettable)...However Israel is dropping HUNDREDS of bombs in Lebanon by the second and HUNDREDS have been killed, but yet America focuses on the Israeli deaths. Israel aims for the civilian places such as airports.

No! Most of the blame would have to fall on the Muslims. The are the ones who want to wipe Israel off the face of the map. They are also out to kill anyone who is not a "faithful" Muslim. Israel would live in peace if everyone would just leave them alone.

You must be from Europe. The Arabs first attacked Israel in 1948, and every conflict or war since then has been started by the Arabs. Israel has only retaliated to an attack. They have never attacked anyone. Read history.

You can't judge from this one incident. You have to understand the history of Israel beginning with the fall of the Ottoman Empire. Here's an easy-to-read book that will give you the basics:
"The Complete Idiot's Guide to the Middle East Conflict."

Please don't blame anyone until you understand the background.

Israel did it best to make peace. The Arabs did not want peace they believe that Israel should be wiped out. Hitler tried it and lost. Did Israel go across and kidnap any of the Arab soldiers? Would you want to see your sons and daughters kidnap just because they were a race of person no one likes or care for?

Any country that is governed by those wishing to push Israel into the sea is at fault.
Israel is a country and a people established by GOD.
I just wish that Israel would set their borders to match the borders as set in the Old Testament.
Pray for the peace of Jerusalem.

The other countries don't want Israel to exist, while all Israel is doing is trying to survive. I think its pretty clear that the arab nations are to blame.
