I have a beautifil American Staffy, she came on heat 3 days ago - when is the best time to have another staffy to come and mate her?

2006-07-18 13:50:03 · 13 answers · asked by kezzafazza 2 in Pets Dogs

We have bred her once before and she is a purebred pup with papers, the dog we are using is also. Yes, it was very hard work on my part and costly too, however the dogs were sold for a great deal of money, and I do believe if people are prepared to pay that much they must be serious and hopefully caring pet owners. We took the best of care during her pregnany the first time, regular check ups, ultrasounds, excercise etc.
The reason I am asking this question now is, I cannot recall exactly how far into her heat it was last time she became pregnant and wanted to be more accurate this time.

Maybe you are right, perhaps I am not looking at this with best intentions for the pups or my dog. However, I would love to keep one of the pups for my own and have two friends also who would like to buy from me, I would rather do this than buy from elsewhere. I suppose it is sad that I profit from this, although in the end the dogs may be sold for a lot, it doesnt work out quite as profitable after paying for everything during the pregnancy and for the pups during the first months of their life. I will think about it though.

It is wonderful there are so many people against breeding. If the human parents were only so careful.
I am a breeder, I hate to read all the negative comments, and I have not seen a single positive one yet.
I am sure you have taken your dog to the vet, and I am equally sure he would have already informed you if there were any genetic faults with your dog.
You ask a simple straight forward question.....and got bombarded with flak about backyard breeders.
I will try to answer your question.
The female will be in heat for about 21 days.
The first 8 or 9 days she will flirt, run, and play with the male, she will allow him to mount but not breed. This is her play stage.
From the 10 to the 15 day she will be willing to allow the male to breed, she is usually the most fertile during this time. This is her lets get married stage.
The lock will last from 15 to 45 minutes so have them in a small area so the male doesn't get pulled all over the place, he is in a position to sustain damage to his private parts.
Count from 59 to 63 days from a good lock and expect babies. Be sure you know which vet is on call the week you are expecting babies. Better to be safe than sorry.
I try to let my male breed at least 2 separate times with at least 24 hours between breedings.
The last 5 days of her heat she will rip the males head off if he gets too close to the business end of her body. This is her touch me and you die stage.
You know your female, you know her bloodlines. I am sure you have enough common sense to review the males genetic history and his disposition. There is no reason you should not make a very good profit off your dogs. It is not a crime, if you have a good product of any manner you expect a good price for it. That the product just happens to be a loved family pet does not make the value of the puppies any less.
Sorry about going on and on at you, but I am sick to death of everyone acting like every time a dog is bred it is to produce a backyard breeder. Everyone that breeds is not a backyard breeder, trying to breed a dog to death.
Just pick through the advice you receive and form your own opinions. As you said this litter is for your enjoyment and you already have some of the babies placed.
Good luck

It shouldn't harm her, but I really doubt any female's willingness to stand to be mounted if she's out of heat. Have you gotten her pregnancy confirmed, or are you just assuming? You really need it confirmed ASAP so you can make plans for the pregnancy (like diet changes and dewormings). I suggest you take her right to the vet and get a vaginal swab (to make sure she's not in heat), and an ultrasound or relaxin blood test to confirm that she's a month along in her pregnancy. Honestly, if your mentor told you it was okay to not supervise the breeding or to not seek a pregnancy test, I question her ability as a good mentor. Breedings must be supervised, as a female in heat can be aggressive towards the male (even if they are good buddies the rest of the time). Also, matings should be planned so they take place over a period of no more than 2-3 days. If you spread them out too much, you have a much harder time calculating the due date and if she should need a C-section it becomes very easy to schedule it too early or too late and let the litter die. The most accurate way to time breedings is by having the vet do progesterone tests over several days so you know exactly when she is ovulating and fertile.

Never. If you do not know the answer to that question - you should not be breeding her!!!!! She will be much healthier if she is spayed, and you will not be directly contributing to the pet overpopulation problem that is an epidemic in this country.

She will be a much better pet for you nad your family (I can tell from you posting on this site that she is not of breeding quality!) Walk through any local animal shelter - trust me - there are enough Staffies in the shelters. Even if you think you have found your puppies good homes, one in four will end up in a shelter at some point in their life...

##################################################

Wow - she has papers - that makes all the difference...papers do not mean anything - she could have a grade 4 heart murmur and still have papers...anything with two AKC registered parents can have papers - it does not mean they are a breeding quality dog. People are amazing - papers = we must breed!!!!

And you said it all - you sold the puppies for a lot of MONEY. That is what this is about - not improving the breed or being a responsible breeder or producing quality pups. So sad.

Now everyone can cure infertility using this natural remedy http://pregnancyhelps.info
infertility can run in the family and one of the first things the doctor asks you when you go to a fertility clinic is your family history regarding cases of infertility or other reproductive issues.
If infertility is caused by genetic disorder then it's not unusual that one of the kids (your mom) doesn't have it and another does (your aunt).
two months of trying is still to early to be concerned about the fact that you might be infertile and it's also quite early to go to a fertility specialist. Go to a regular Obgyb to get a closer insight and see what ways there are are to improve your fertility rate.
Also remove alcohol, caffeine and cigarettes from your life because they might influence your chances too. Stress is also a risk factor when it comes to infertility.

First, I want to caution you against breeding if you have not researched it thoroughly. It is very expensive to do and there are risks involved for your dog. If you are sure that this is what you want to do, then your dog should be ready around days 10 to 14. You should do AT LEAST two breedings, 48 hours apart, unless you are keeping the dogs together, then just let them be. Your dog will also let you know when she is ready if the male is around, as she will stand with her rear towards him and hold her tail to the side. This is called flagging. Good luck and I wish you the best.

I used to breed cockers, the answer is simple, bring a mate and let them have sex.
It's good for both and you will get pups.
The best time is now, and believe me, having a dog to get it on with her you are doing a huge favor.

If you have never bred before, stop what you are doing and go talk to your vet. It's time consuming, expensive and you will likely not come out ahead after you sell the pups. Your vet will answer all your questions and prepare you for all the work ahead of you.
