Sorry for his loss. It does make you chuckle as you get the image of him frantically searching and then realising where they may be. Believe it or not he will laugh too eventually. When he gets his new choppers and tells this story he'll think it's funny as well.

It can happen easier than you think. I had Invisaligns a few years ago. (FYI: Invisaligns are clear braces that are made of plastic and you remove them whenever you eat and to brush your teeth.) I was at a fair and we were eating funnel cake so I took out my Invisaligns and wrapped them in a napkin on the side of my plate. We were about to leave right after eating funnel cake but I saw the counter with the caramel apples...well who can leave without eating or taking home a caramel apple...! *blasphemous* So, I go over to buy a caramel apple. I grab my leftover funnel cake that I can no longer finish, grab the napkins and my empty drink cup and drop it in the trash along the way. By the way, the trash can had this big clown head covering which was very disturbing to say the least. I am holding my caramel apple and ready to go home when I realize...
@*#(@& where did I leave my Invisaligns? They're gone! ACK! I think I trashed them. I run over to the trash can with the clown head on top...I'm deathly scared of clowns so I cringe as I pull the head off the trash can so that I can lean in and find my Invisaligns. They had just emptied the trash can it seems because I couldn't even see the bottom of the trash can. I look away just preparing to give it up when I look on the ground and ...
Right next to the trash can is a wad of napkins...and inside...

Now that the fun and laughter is over, it's time for you guys/gals to empty the pockets and get step dad a new pair, or at least donate a significant part of your piggy bank and hand him a pile of coin to at least say you are sorry, but try not to break out laughing again when you give them to him
Added: Sorry, I was laughing so hard, I forgot the question.
I hate to say it, but when it gets mixed up in a bunch of rubbish, it may never get found but, then again.... Best bet is to notify the council and ask if they will be so kind as to post them back, so your step dad can have his smile back,on the off chance they are found, or at least hold them for you to collect.

Not unusual two of my children threw away their retainers at a fast food place and had to go back and search through the garbage to find them.

poor sod put an advert in the local paper pleading for them you might get a kind dentist offer him new one's, phone the local newspaper they will help for a laugh and it wont cost you. tell him good -lucki n his quest to find them
