way to many animals are being put down every year because of pet overpopulation. do ya'll agree?

it makes them safer, less likely to get sick, and they live longer as well.

just because you own a purebred dog doesn't mean that you have to breed him, that's just increasing the problem greatly.

mixed breeds are so much better own in my personal opinion.

I agree 100% I work in a Shelter and am one of the people who put them down..People look at us as murderers but when people dont spay and neuter and bring puppies/cats in we get full really quick..Being a county facility you cant turn people away..So we have to put them down if they dont get adopted..I think people think by bringing animals to shelters they have a great chance of getting homes..WRONG..WE may adopt one out of 200 cats and 1 out of 50 dogs. Just because you get a full bred dog doesnt need it needs to be bred.A spayed/neutered animal makes such a better pe tfor a number of reasons. Also true Pet owners should take a day out of their life and spend at a shelter..Walking dogs , Spending time with them whatever..The animals need it so bad..and it may be the last one they get, No matter WHAT the staff tells you..The staff will appreciate it as well...

I do not agree that EVERY dog and cat should be spayed or neutered. If the dog is of excellent quality and has health clearances and can add to a breed, then it can be bred. Some of us like a certain breed of dog and want that breed. I do not want a mixed breed and I do not want another dog with an unknown history. I have 1 now and that is enough.

And it is not us good hobby breeders that are causing the overpopulation problem!!!!!! It is many of the people on here that still think it is necessary for the pet to have one litter, or want to make money, or cannot afford the spay and leave the dog outside, or many other reasons!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree with you on all your statements. A mixed breed does not have the illnesses that full breeds have. They are better pets in my opinion.
I was not aware of how bad the situation was until I volunteered for an animal shelter. I could not stand it and quit after 2 weeks. Now I rescue and TNR feral cats in my community to cut down on the slaughter.
I was like most people and allowed my pets to get pregnant and give them away. Not anymore...I think anyone that feels the need to breed (whether it is a pure breed or not) should volunteer for a kill shelter to see what happens on a daily basis.
I cried every day that I worked there...it was hard trying to comfort these animals and say it was alright when it was not.
They were so scared (who's to blame them) that they wouldn't eat.

Totally. I have spayed or neutered all my cats and dogs over the years and it's not only responsible, it makes them better pets and happier in general. Pets shouldn't be out roaming around lookin' for love in all the wrong places. The fighting, the wandering, pets getting hit by cars while roaming, the animals hanging around trying to get some action...it's so wrong. People who have show cats and dogs manage to keep their animals contained and sexually unactive until they breed them and make thousands of dollars off the little baby critters, but I wouldn't consider those regular pets if they're champion pedigree animals. Too many accidents happen in the real world, though, and there are too many people who want to witness the "miracle of life" by allowing their pets to breed or some b.s. like that. Strays spread disease and suffer and die if they don't get picked up and euthanized, and most pets that get picked up do get killed because there's just no way to take care of them all. Alter every pet that can be altered. It's definitely the right thing to do.

I agree but when you consider that most people have no respect for animals that really becomes a secondary issue. Animals are abused at every level every day. I am an online advocate and I sign petitions of all types relating to animal abuse and neglect. I'm glad someone else notices it too.

Agree 100 % - unless you are a reputable breeder trying to improve the genetics of the breed - so few of the good breeders though...

I agree with you 100%! All of my cats and dogs are spayed and neutered except for the kitten, but her appointment is one week from tomorrow! Keep spreading the message!

No! No! No! I think we have an over people population.....if anything, WE need to be "fixed"! Our own population overgrowth and gutting wildlife areas to put up housing developments and sub-divisions is making the wildlife LOOK over crowded. We invade the wild lands and get pissed when we see too many cats/dogs and other animals....SHAME ON US...

yes i agree! its so sad. i lived in salt lake city for 11 years and we always had stray cats and dogs everywhere in our neighborhood, because the owners wouldn't spay or neuter their pets and so when they had babies they would just let them go and run loose everywhere because they couldn't afford enough food for all of them. its ridiculous!! if you cant afford to take care of your pets than don't get one in the first place!! its common knowledge that some people don't seem to have.

I agree, absolutely.

All of my cats are fixed.

Unless one plans to breed the animals, and assure each a good home, all should be fixed.
