He has told me personally that the ten commandments were not his idea. Some people got together and made them up to keep disidents in line. There's nothing better than fearing something you can't see!

It's never O.K.
But breaking the Ten Commandments doesn't eternally condem you. Part of the point of the TCs is to show that everyone sins. The bible says you are gonna sin. It's human nature. The bible doesn't promise that your never gonna sin, or never gonna break the Ten Commandments, just that God forgave you for those sins.

You should look into the Church of Divine Wealth. We take a much more progressive view of the ten Commandments. First of all, it is now nine... not ten. We decided to redefine adultry to mean sexual activity between two consenting persons... either adults, or otherwise legally emancipated in their state, city or other applicable political subdivision. After we redefined it, there didn't seem to be anything wrong with it, so we checked it... leaving nine.
Then, we looked at the word 'Commandments'. That seemed rather harsh, so we changed it to 'Suggestions'. So now, rather than the 'Ten Commandments', we have the 'Nine Suggestions'.
Next, we figured out that it was an unnecessary burden to try to remember all of them and follow all of them, all of the time... so we changed the parameters. You've still got to try to conform to them all... but you only have to do one at a time... for a month at a time... in order. However, ONCE, during each nine-month cycle, you get to play a 'wild card'. If you happen to be following a 'Suggestion' and it suddenly becomes inconvenient for you, you get to switch. For example, if you happened to be following "It's probably a bad idea to covet your neighbor's wife this month", and you suddenly encounter a neighbor's wife that you'd like to covet, you could switch to "You probably shouldn't steal anything this month."
Having made all these progressive changes and improvements, we find that, on average, far fewer of our followers end up in hell, compared to the more mainstream christian cults.

The commandments are a man made set of rules designed to keep an unruly ancient Jewish population in line by making them afraid of Gods punishment. This is beyond obvious to any one who thinks about it even a little bit.
God could care less if you ever pay attention to any of them.
God is unconditionally loving. Unconditional means no conditions.
God simply loves you warts and all. Love judges nothing, it simply loves.
Believing this is having perfect faith in God.
Believing that God might judge you is having only partial faith in Gods love for you.
Is your faith perfect?

I don't think that it would ever be OK, but I am not God. I know that He is merciful and just, so He is aware of all circumstances (for example: your family is destitute with no hope for an income, so you steal food). I feel pretty confident that He would forgive something like that.
