People are sure mermaids aren't real because of common sense. A mermaid is half-human half-fish, so that on its own is where the problem starts. Are they cold blooded like fish, or warm blooded like humans? Do they respire with lungs or gills? Since they lay eggs (bottom half is fish), why do they breastfeed (that's what boobies are for)? And that's just the beginning. Since they live in saltwater, how come they have such thin skin and such little body fat? All other water-dwelling mammals have tough leathery thick skin and layers of fat. They need that to survive in saltwater, you know? And how can a mermaid swim with that shape? Without stabilizing fins (which even dolphins have), she'd just flail around uselessly in the water and probably attract a school of sharks. Now for the big one: Since mermaids always have beautiful flowing hair, why don't they have hairy pits? You never see a mermaid with hairy pits, not even in Italy, but they should have ZZ Top armpits going on! Blades would rust in saltwater, Nair cream would rinse away immediately and there's no way you can plug in an electric razor in saltwater, so how come they don't have pit-hair? Doesn't make any sense. That's how everyone knows mermaids aren't real. But hey... if you wanna put a floppy fishy tail on and swim topless at my place, you go right ahead. I even promise not to look at your seashells. Much.

It is beleived that "mermaids" were actually dugongs (sp), a relative of the familiar "sea cow" or Manatee that inhabits areas enar the West Indies. Sailors, away for a very ong time and deprived of adequate nutrition, would often hear things, "sirens", and see what they believed to be mermaids swimming.

They are supposedly mythological.
I've heard of "theories" (for lack of a better term) that say some of these mythological creatures may have existed at one time when humans were in their "early primitive phase." And that images of these creatures have been etched in our consciousness through our DNA.
Who knows?
