The Queen Mary II has a "Zero Waste" policy. They recycle all water used on board, and they do something with the trash too, I'm just not sure what.

A common misunderstanding is just how much energy modern society uses. A cruise ship consumes more energy than hundreds or maybe even thousands of football fields full of solar panels could possibly produce. The propulsion, heating, cooling, ventilation, lights, elevators etc. use an enormous amount of energy, so they use 100% fossil fuels - either bunker C or diesel, depending if the engine is a steam turbine of piston.

Like brancomicguy said, those huge smokestacks aren't decorations!

The only way a cruise ship could become green (ie, zero emissions) would be to convert it to nuclear.

There used to be a high tech sail small cruise ship in Sydney. There is a solar powerd boat Ra on the Norfolk Broards UK.

but most cruise liners are built for the "luxury" old people market and these are the people who don't want to worry about little things like sustainability; profligate use (waste) of energy is seen as a status symbol.
The operators will use whatever energy is the costs them least.

While the majority of boats are use solar panels for electricity, cruise ships and larger vessels tend to use alternators and batteries to generate electric power. Therefore the answer is no, they do not use green energy.

When they run out of diesel fuel, they can turn the ships into galleys and recruit paddle engineers from the Caribbean.
