It either means "speaking in many tongues" which refers to being able to be understood by someone who hears a different language than you speak, this occurred at Pentecost.

Paul writes about "speaking in tongues" which refers to speaking in a language of the Spirit. There are two interpretations of this. The first is a language of gibberish that requires an interpreter to explain such divine words. This is only held by a few denominations and is typically considered the wrong interpretation because none of the prophets in the Bible ever spoke this way. They spoke directy to the people, and Jesus who was God directly spoke to people. So did God when he spoke from the cloud on the mount to the Israelites, so the concept of such a language is illogical and unnecessary.

The second interpretation, is speaking like Jesus did to the crowds. This is displayed by the fact that He spoke in parables which only a few understood. And he even said often "Let he who has ears to hear let him hear" implying that when someone speaks from the Spirit of the teachings of God only a few will be able to receive the message. These few are then instructed to interpret and spread the news to others. Such is the case with a Sermon, where a pastor/priest interprets the Word of God so that it may clearly be understood by the members of the church. Or when the disciples spread the gospel to the people after Jesus rose, for Jesus alone made clear to them the parables of which He spoke.

It most likely means they are bragging. Speaking in tongues is a very personal thing. In Corinthians Paul says it should not be done unless there are several ppl to interpret it or ppl will think you are crazy. Is it any wonder that ppl think that. It was meant to edify the person doing it as a prayer language or in rare cases to speak to those of a different language in their own native tongue. I will admit to having done it but its no longer something I do around others unless, and it would have to be really clear, that God asked me to.

Speaking in tongues referees to what happened in the Upper room when the Holy Sprite came upon them and they began speaking in different languages. It's God speaking through man but it is only valid if there is an interpreter in the room to interpret the message that was given by God through man.

What IS that smell? Fertilizer? No, more pungent it-- must be bullshit. That's what it is!!!!

Speaking in tongues, means to speak in another language with Language being the key word. If no one can understand the message, including the messenger, it's a load of crap.

This is suppose to be a form of language between an individual and God. God is suppose to be the only who understands what this form of language mean. Although I am not to familiar with the language myself, and I have never been able to do it, I would think that the person(s) that are capable of doing this is special in some form.

Many people inaccurately define speaking in tongues as "speaking gibberish" or "talking nonsense." The truth is, speaking in tongues is the most intelligent, perfect language in the universe. It is God's language.

With those who practice it today it is nothing but gibberish.
When the apostles were gifted by Holy spirit At Pentecost, they were able to speak fluently with foreign strangers in their native language and be completely understood. That is why so many were baptized that day.
The gibberish practiced today communicates with no one, it's just emotional foolishness.

there is conversing in tongues as a private prayer language between the believer and God and then there is the present of Tongues and Interpretation that's to be exercised in a worship service. The speaker will provide a message in a language that they have by no skill spoken in the previous and the two they or yet another interior the service will interpret it. that's meant for the edification of the church and the former is meant for the edification of the guy themselves as properly as the two glorifying God.

Tongues is a gift of the Spirit. the easiest explanation is that our human language is limited in expression. when one can no longer express the praise, the love, the desire for God, the Spirit takes over and expresses the emotion.
