Mosquitoes

My family frequently visits the High Uintas where mosquitoes swarm in large numbers. Deet of any strength is of little use. There are times when Deet is not available and there are times when bites happen unexpectedly. We keep vitamin B-1 in our first aid kit. Anytime we will be outside in an area where we know there will be a lot of mosquitoes, we take the B-1 vitamin.

B-1 is water soluble so the body easily eliminates any extra that it does not need. This will allow you to experiment with how much to take. You will know you have taken a little more than you want when your breath gets sour. That sour smell is what insects smell. It is the smell they are repulsed by. The more you reek of it, the farther insects of all kind will stay away from you.

I keep it in my first aid kit because there are times when bites happen when we are unprepared. B-1 reduces the allergic reaction to most bits. My brothers and sisters used to get big scabs and blisters from mosquito bites. My children never do. As soon as a spot of red that itches shows up, they get some B-1 and continue to take it whenever the itching returns.

Apparently, my understanding is that B-1 helps the liver, which is the place that some poisons we are allergic to are processed.

Anyway, for whatever reason, when we go to the High Uintas, into the mosquito swarms, we take the B-1 at least 4 hours in advance. We continue to take it throughout the trip at 6 hour intervals, since the body actively eliminates B-1. We don't even get near the Deet which is very dangerous for children. The mosquitoes stay far from us.

We know because, we can walk toward those ravenous beasts, through their cloud and they disperse.

I am sure it is not a fail safe thing, but that is what works without a hitch for our family.

Now a flue is something else that one must deal with carefully. The best defense is a strong immune system and that means learning about how to strengthen the immune system with proper diet. That is a lecture for another day. It is something that each person must study on their own because each of us has a unique set of genes, a unique life style and diet.

There are several ways to prevent mosquitoes from biting you

Wear Socks: 80% of all bites are on the ankle

Wear closed toed shoes for the same reason

Avoid Bannanas during the mosquito season: Bannanas produce a scent that mosquitoes go ape over

Avoid sugary drinks because they also attract mosquitoes

Eat citrus. Despite being sweet, citrus does not attract mosquitoes and in fact repels them

Vitamin B Complex deters mosquitoes

Garlic also deters those vampires

Use essential oils' catnip and rosemary;
Last year, several members of the Iowa State University Department of Entomology presented the results of a study on common catnip. Among their conclusions was the fact that an essential oil in catnip is 10 times more effective at repelling mosquitoes than potent chemicals such as DEET.

Shop around for the best buy
I would add lavender to the oil for a good aroma

Eliminate standing water in your community or at least in your neighborhood:A couple of drops of Citronella Oil, Neem Oil, or Catnip will prevent eggs from hatching.

Recycle and dispose of old tires and other containers where mosquitoes breed

Shower with unscented shampoos and laundry detergent. Strong scents attract mosquitoes.

Avoid going out in the hour after dawn and the hour before sunset. Over 80% of bites occur when the temperature is perfect for breeding in the hour after sunrise and one hour before sunset.

I heard somewhere that mosquito is attracted to your carbon dioxide output, so in theory, you can prevent bites by not breathing. Though then, you might have a whole different problem. Or if the swarm of mosquitoes are all males, then you don't have to worry about being bit.

Cover your self with honey, lots of perfume and mosquitoes hate the smell of blood so if you can it might help to bath in some. Or you could not hang out in a swarm of mosquitoes.

I weigh down soluble aspirin and combine it to a paste and then spread it over the bumps. keep away from going out on a nighttime or early morning, cover up and wash in many situations all sweaty factors and use a first class antiperspirant There are some acceptable insect repellents on the marketplace. Reapply those after washing.

Go to the sporting goods section at Wal Mart and buy DEET, costs a little more than Off but it's much more effective.

Breathing only periodic bursts of air in a direction away from where you are going helps a little since they are attracted to the CO2 we breathe out.

No sweating. They are attracted to the smell of sweat and heat.

No staying in one place, you have to keep moving but not too fast! They see fast objects before seeing slow objects because they are related to flies (which react to fast movements but not so much to slow ones).
