I'm on CD33, and it's my first month off BCPs. 2 negative pregnancy tests, but I'm wondering if it's too early? I used protection sometimes during this cycle, but not recently. Could I have ovulated really late and be in the first week or two of pregnancy? What has been your experience with the first month off BCPs?

Also, my Dr. said she could give me a blood test this week if I want it and if it's negative, she could induce my period so I can get back on birth control (this was just a month off to get my body back to normal after a rough couple of months) but I'm afraid that her blood test wouldn't recognize if I became pregnant within the last week or two - should I just wait until I have a period to do anything? I know that sometimes it takes up to 2 months for your period to come the 1st month off BC! Long time to wait, but I don't want to kill my baby by accident by inducing a period!

My cycles have always been exactly 28 days - so I'm 5 days past now.

A blood test can detect the pregnancy hormone earlier than a hpt, usually around 8-10 days post ovulation/possible conception, so if it's been that long since you've had unprotected sex, it should be accurate. HPTs typically take longer to detect pregnancy, at least 10 days, usually 14 (and it still takes longer for the pregnancy hormone to be detected in some women). There's unfortunately no real way to know if you're pregnant unless you know which day of your cycle you were on when you had unprotected sex (although, even then, it'd still be hard to know since you just got off bc and your cycles are irregular). Do you remember having any ovulation signs (one of the main ones being egg-white cervical mucus, discharge that looks like egg white) at any time during your cycle? If so, that's likely when you ovulated. It's probable that you ovulated later than day 14 if you're on CD33 as the typical luteal phase (time from ovulation to the start of your next cycle is 12-16 days).

If you know it's been at least 8 or 9 days since you last had unprotected sex, I would suggest getting a blood test. You should be able to count on the results being accurate at that point. If you're not sure it's been that long, I'd say wait another couple of days and go in for a test.

Your body needs time to readjust to the "natural" state of coming off the BCP. Don't stress out - if you've taken a HPT (home preg test) and it was negative, you should be fine. But, how long are your cycles usually? 28? 29 30, etc etc. Blood tests are the most effective way to determine if you are pregnant or not but I would say that your body is just trying to play catch up. If you were pregnant, you may / may not have signs...How late are you??

the previous two comments had some great points... but it is possible to have a positive HPTest not show up until 17-19 days after your last unprotected sex. if you want to be safe, wait 20 days and take a final test, just to make sure.
