I have a bit of information for you, and this actually is a very good question. Whatever you do, resist the temptation to yank on a hangnail. The nail material will yank out a hunk of flesh, and that resulting hole in the cuticle (even if is very small) is prone to infection.
Instead; carefully, with a sterile tool, clip the nail material off as neatly and as close to the cuticle as is practical. To prevent hangnails, keep them manicured to prevent fractures, cracks and sharp edges that lead to the splintering effect. If your nail material tends to be weak and subject to undue breaking, help strengthen it with the ingestion of Knox gelatin.

An ingrown nail occurs when a nail grows into the flesh at the side of the nail. This usually affects the toes, particularly the big toe. People with curved or thick nails are most likely to develop a problem with ingrown nails, although ingrown nails can affect anyone.
Ingrown nails are most frequently caused by:
Cutting the toenails too short or rounding the nail edges.
Wearing shoes that fit poorly or that press the nail into the toe.
An injury such as stubbing your toe, which may cause the nail to grow inward.
Most ingrown nail problems can be prevented by properly grooming the toenails and by wearing shoes that fit. Home treatment can often help relieve pain and allow the nail to grow out normally.
Medical treatment of an infected ingrown nail often includes oral antibiotics or topical ointments. A severely ingrown nail may have to be removed.
Hope this helps.

I don't have a way to prevent or rid a hang nail but I do have a way to relieve the pressure and pain they cause until you can have something done about them. A lady friend of mine is a Manicurist/Pedicurist and she told me how to relieve the pressure of one I have on my left big toe. You have to cut a V out of the nail closest to the hangnail by using a pair of toenail clippers. Cut as close to the quick as possible and as near as you can to the hangnail of the toe affected. It has worked for me in the past and you would be surprised at the release of pressure! You can feel the effects immediately. I hope this helps.
ie: nail = ____V__ for a left toe
ie: nail = __V____ for a right toe

i have a bad habbit of chewing my nails, and i used to get alot of hang nails but my brother tought me a trick were, when you in the shower, you push that skin that hangs down onto you nail, think they call it a cudicle or something, ne way push that skin up towards you knuckles back to the normal skin level. it may hurt but beleive me it works at preventing future hang nails. you have to do it every day however.

When cutting the nail cut it with clippers straight across, don't cut into the edge of the cuticle and don't bite them.

even as i became youthful I used to pull it off and make it bleed yet my mom informed me i became pulling it incorrect. You pull the draw close nail faraway from you than disinfected it with alcohol or hydrogen peroxide as to no longer get it contaminated.
