It's possible to get struck by lightning in a thunderstorm, even if you are not the tallest object. However, just because it is raining in your area doesn't mean that the lightning is very close. You can estimate the distance of the lightning from you by counting the number of seconds between the time you see a lightning flash and hear the thunder. Each second represents about a mile away from you. This works because light travels faster than sound. When the you see the lightning and hear the thunder very close together, this means the lightning is very near you. You should take shelter, but not under a tall tree or tall metal object, as mentioned by other answerers. Buildings or cars are good shelter in a lightning storm. Also, if you are outside in a thunderstorm and you feel the hairs stand up on your head/neck/skin, you should go inside immediately, since this is a sign of electrical charge building up around you.

Why take the chance? At least do not make yourself the tallest object around (like running across a flat field). And do not stand under a lone tall object (like the only tree in that field).

No, you will not... I was born in Fort Lauderdale Florida, the rainiest state of all... I used to walk home from school in thunderstorms... Even in tropical storms... Don't worry, your chances are like 3 million to 1... If it makes you feel better, wear a pair of rubber bottomed running shoes... The rubber will ground you, just like the tires in a car do....

I think that would depend on where you go running. If you're running through a suburban neighbourhood where there are lots of things taller than you (trees, hydro poles, houses, etc) you should be ok. I wouldn't go jogging across an open field though.

No. The tallest object is the target. If you are "it" then better crawl to your destination. If you reach a mile in that position, you are definitely a candidate for the Guinness Book of Records - just kidding.
