I usually say "excuse me", wait until I'm acknowledged, and then barge ahead. It doesnt work at the grocery store though. Inevetably some lady is gonna have her cart blocking the whole width of the aisle, and I'll say excuse me... and she'll be completely oblivious, even after I say it 3 more times, so then when I get pissed off and try to go around her, she'll get mad and say "well you could've said EXCUSE ME"

ugh... ok I'm done with my rant
thanks

I like this question!

I think it's similar to the question why you drive in a parkway and park in a driveway -- over time, people have gotten the meanings of "excuse" and "pardon" as verbs confused. It should be "pardon me" that you say when you barge ahead; "excuse me" applies when you unintentionally do something embarrassing (e.g. belch, burp, or flatulate). But when's the last time you heard a person say "pardon me"?

I think that people say excuse, as a excuse for their bad behavior. I think is very rude. I hate when poeple just assume it's ok to cut ahead of you, even if they say excuse me. I didn't give anyone the go ahead.

"Excuse me" also means "get out of my way!" When I hear someone say it I know that they are about to run over me. Don't know why they do it. I guess they think they're being polite.

So you can get out of the way, and give them the path.

So they don't feel like they're being rude, even though they are.
