My father was one and now I am too. But I've found a way to keep it under control. You need to set rules for yourself, ones you strictly follow.

1) if there is a specif thing you hoard only allow yourself to keep a manageable number of them. If they are big five or six if it's small things ten or fifteen. If you find a new one you can't live without one have to go. It's the "one in, one out" rule. Very important.

2) Don't put yourself in a position where you're going to bring new things into the house. If your problem is garage sales, you can't go to them, same with second hand stores or outlet malls. Keep away from temptation.

3) every month you need to go through all your stuff, your collections, your clothes, shoes, DVDs, everything and sort out into piles of love, like, need, never use, use often, and didn't even know I had. Then you have to toss out or give to a second hand store the ones that are in the negative piles.

4) clutter down! If you reorganize, keep everything neat, then you won't hoard, don't hide things, keep everything where you can easily access, see and use. If you need to hire a professional organizer.

Good luck and remember no "thing" is more important than your life!

My wife is a hoarder. I throw things out when she isn't looking. Sometimes she sees things out on the curb waiting for the trash, and she brings them in when I'm not looking.

Funny, eh?

Yes. I moved and didn't want to move it so I hauled it all the dumpster and all the tweakers in my old neighborhood thought they had won the lottery.
