Be careful with steam cleaning, you could end up with a worse mess. Replacing your filter in your furnace will help to, if you have to run it otherwise let everything settle, vacuum, clean filters, vacuum, clean filters etc. etc.
There is also a product (I can't think of the name) but it's like a powder when it comes out of the bag but is actually an oil based product that absorbs up the dust, but I don't know about using it on carpet, we used a ton of it when we were sanding our new house, but we didn't have carpet in the rooms that we were doing. Anyway, we got it at Home Depot. I'm sure you could find it online.
I also went through a regular vacuum and a shop vac during our construction, but changing the filters helps immensely

I hate dry wall dust , gets on everything. It might be cheaper to replace the carpet, but also the easiest way to do this.
After you hire professionals to clean the ducts and change the furnace filter, then the best way would be to wash the walls windows and floors. Then install new carpeting.

Try not to use your AC until you've got most of it dealt with. For the fine stuff, wet a towel to the point of dampness (like what it is after you dry off out of the shower) and pat it all over the floor; works like a charm. Then get a steam cleaner (or hire one!) and they can get out the stuff in the carpet. (It'll make your house feel cleaner, too!

We had to get a drywall filter for our shop vac (they sell them at places like Lowe's or Home Depot) and then it picked it up just fine.
I wouldn't steam clean until you get as much of the dust up as possible, remember drywall is basically plaster...

well 2 late 4 this they make a sticky plastic 1 side for carpet and floor protection. [about 3'wide]might have to live with it now, keep sweeping and shop vac or pull it and replace it, might try a carpet scrubber but who knows?
