Call them. Listen to them. Do nice, loving things for them. Spend time together. Let your feelings show through your actions. Sometimes you don't have to say a word.

Do you really care because if you do it is usually the most natural thing on earth. You say that your boyfriend was, so I assume he is from the past, but when they're that needy they're usually also very selfish and you have to supply all the caring. The thing with a real love relationship is that it is totally unconditional and selfless, so you give without expecting but and this is a big but, it is a two way street. If it is not from both sides at once then the relationship dies. Many people grew up in households where love was never a very physical and shown thing, in other words the children never saw what love between a father and mother was. It was something reserved for private moments. Now the children grow up reserved and don't know how to show their emotional and intimate side or how to share feelings. To cut a long story short. Love is comforting. It is touchy-feely, hand holding and snuggling. It's wet kisses and feeling complete and it is mind-blowing. If you don't know how to care, let go of your reservations and try really falling in love without over analyzing everything. Communicate your feelings. It usually helps.

Listen to what they say and what they don't say
Try to understand where they are coming from (and why)
Do not judge them - acceptance is golden
Offer support when needed - reliance is key
Be thoughtful - remind them of things, genuinely ask how they are doing, etc.
Encourage them when they are down
