now this is weird. In theory, they should be dimensionless (no units), because a spreadsheet can be printed out at any scale you like. But that's not right, because you DO set the type size in the cell, in "point". And "points" is a unit of measurement - there are 72 points in one inch.

Then the units seem to be different for rows and for columns. A row height of 12.75 and a column width of 8.43 give you a cell that is wider than it is high. What??!

All of which means that the numbers used to describe cell dimensions have no obvious units that I can think of. The units for the height and the width must therefore be different.

Only way I can think of is to print out a sheet, with gridlines, at 100% scale and get a damn ruler, then compare the measurements to the numbers.

But why do you care, exactly? It seems like a mad thing for a coursework question to ask. No-one ever bothers with that in real life.

PS reading the answers below, I think the point about digits fitting the box might be right for the width (on an assumed point size and font of course) and then the height might be in points. Could be. Well done sir.

How is row height measured?

Row height and line size
The default height of a row in Excel depends on the font and maximum font size used in that row. In Excel, the default font is 10-point Arial. For this combination of font and font size, the height of a cell with one line of text is 12.75 points.

So to allow room in that cell for two lines of text, you can specify a height of 25.5 points (12.75 × 2). Or to add room for an empty line between two lines of text, you can make the row height 38.25 points (12.75 × 3).

Note The automatic row height can vary for different fonts, even if they are set at the same point size.

Measurement units for rows
When you specify a height in the Row Height box, the measurement is displayed in points. When you drag the boundary below a row heading to adjust the height of a row on the worksheet, a ScreenTip displays the measurement first in points, and then in pixels (in parentheses).

Note These default units of measurement cannot be changed in Excel 2003.

The following table shows the approximate conversion of inches to points and pixels.

Inches Points Pixels

.25 18 24
.5 36 48
1 72 96
1.5 108 144
2 144 192

It's the average number of digits 0 through 9 in standard font which will fit in a cell. It usually has a number in brackets following which indicates the width in pixels.
