Cats are territorial and sometimes they just never learn to get along. Give them different spaces and don't try to push them together. They might start marking their territory all over your house.

If they are both males, you need to get them fixed if they aren't already. Another reason could be that your brother's cat may not be used to anyother animals. He could also feel like he is being threatened by your cat. Cats are very territorial, and if you bring in an adult male that isn't used to other cats, he can get upset. Eventually they will probably get along, but the brother's cat is in a house that he doesn't know, with another cat he doesn't know, and people that he's only been around a few times. It's possible that he just doesn't want to be bothered by anyone. Let him get used to being there, and having different smells and sounds. I'm sure he'll come around. The first thing is just to get them both neutered if they haven't been. That will more than likely calm him down a little.

Give it some time and they will learn to live with each other. Give them both a space they can go to, which you seem to be doing, so they can feel save and dont push the issue with them. Dont put them side by side right away. Get some tuna fish and feed them about 3 feet apart. To get their tasty treat , they have to be civil. You can sit between them, and pet them both while you do this. Then each day move it a bit closer, and closer. This can help them to know that they are not a danger to each other, gl!
