What do you do to try and calm them down? I found him out in the woods about a year ago, wondering if that has anything to do with it.

Very good question. First off when a storm comes and he begins to show signs of fright/shaking/running around etc, Do Not cuddle him, or tell him poor baby etc. Trust me. This is only going to reinforce the fear he is currently feeling at that time. Instead what you need to do is be calm/assertive yourself. Put a collar and leash on him and keep him with you during the storm. Walk him around the house a little during the storm. No need to talk to him, all he hears is blah, blah, blah. Dogs don't understand language, except Body Language. He will feel your energy, this is his language. If you are calm, he will feel that coming from you, and therefore calm down himself. This will not happen immediately. You will have to work on it. Begin to build his self-esteem. Yes, dogs have one too. Start by playing a little tug of war, let him win a few times, but remember you must also win. Remember to be calm/assertive, and your dog will be calm/submissive. Do not pet, hug, or coo at your dog during a thunderstorm. Be strong for him. If you would like more information, feel free to write me.

I have one. Some dogs are just naturally afraid of loud sounds, so it may not have a real "cause".
About the only thing you can do is pet him a bit and be calm yourself - demonstrate no fear yourself, and DON'T overdo with the consolation. Dogs follow the pack leader, so you have to be it for yours, and if you are totally unafraid, and give him a swift consoling pet without making a big deal of it, he'll eventually grow less afraid. Notice I said less afraid - he'll probably ALWAYS be a little touchy during storms, but with time, it should become more manageable.
GOOD LUCK!

Train your dog to get used to weird loud noises. Comforting them during a thunderstorm actually teaches them to continue with bad (unwanted) behavior. When you do this, they think of it as a praise, not comforting. Dogs think way different than humans do. Second option would be to get some Acepromazine from your veterinarian. It's a sedative that will calm them down during thunderstorms.

Our beagle is afraid of thunderstorms. She used to hide in the closet and not eat or come out as long as it was stormy. The other dogs aren't bothered at all by storms so now she just follows me around all day when it is stormy. She even follows me right into the shower.

My Border Collie is very afraid of thunderstorms..she will sit on my feet and lean into me. I just talk softly to her and pet her until she calms down. Mostly, though I think she feels better when the thunder stops than my petting her.

A lot of dogs are scared of storms. If he sees you acting like it's no big deal, he should eventually settle down. If he has some place where he feels secure, try to confine him there when you hear thunder so he won't end up wrecking the place.

Good luck!

She is starting to be previous now and that i do not imagine she hears almost as good as she use to. one ingredient we all started doing became turning the TVs up louder, no matter if it became at nighttime-any ingredient on your toddler top. Then the vet stated we provide a million/2 of a benydrily to calm her somewhat at nighttime and that helped. i quite imagine this canines is wise- she has now taken to laying contained in the tub even as there's a hurricane. perchance she heard the elements guy say that when the TVs the position so loud. LOL actual now when we end our baths/showers for the nighttime we placed her doggie mattress contained in the tub....

I have a black lab that is. She shakes and pants and cowers. She has to practically lay on me. My vet said to give her a Benedryl to help her relax, and it worked! If you have a small dog, probably half of one would do it. Also, you can get "doggie downers" from the vet by presecription for when a storm hits. That's what I would have had to do if the Benedryl didn't work.
