Because it's far more interesting to watch than a movie about a guy that comes back from Vietnam, gets a job, a wife, a house, some kids and dog, don't you think?
It's Hollywood...they always portray the bad side of stuff, because that's apparently what people want to see.

Characters are more interesting if they have personal problems, and making the vets anti-social adds plot possibilities aside from things blowing up.
Also, it could be argued that many Hollywood writers- particularly those growing up in the Vietnam era- take a cynical view of the war. Showing the veterans of Vietnam as broken people is just their way of demonstrating how disastrous the war was (in their opinion).

it was a bad war. Really bad
as most wars are we dont think about the effects
You cant send men to kill women and children and expect them to come home feeling great.
Our country turned our backs on them, which is exactly what will happen with this war.
its already happening.
My cousin came back from Iraq and he want to go back to Iraq
he says that you are treated better there then here and you can do what you want. You are treated with meaning

Some of them are, but remember they went though he** over there. When they came home they had no recognition for what they tried to do. It doesn't matter if they won the war or not, they were serving their country. Their patriotism was above reproach and they were condemned for what their country and government initially told them was right.

Perhaps because US citizens don't want to believe that their troops got humped by a rag tag army from a 3rd World country.
Therefore, by portraying them as pot-smoking, beer drinking idiots, it makes it more acceptable, as "real" troops wouldn't have got beaten.
