The best way to train to become a green beret is to ruck march. I've had three buddies go through SF training and from the stories they tell coming back that's the single most important thing.

Get yourself a large rucksack with a solid frame and some good boots. Fill it with water and rocks until its around 100-120 lbs and go for a walk. The initial qualification tests you have to take have you go on many marches. The weight changes, but gradually goes up to 100-120 lbs. The distance isn't given, you walk or run as quickly and for as long as you can. The place you finish in is recorded. At the end of the qualification phase you are either cut or accepted to continue training by your overall placing.

Your knees won't thank you for any of it though, but your core body strength will dramatically increase.

Join the Salvation Army and wear a beret and spread the good word throughout the world and give away your possessions to the needy. Everybody loves a uniform. You can fight poverty and sin in the world and at night, do what every other good soldier does---go ye forth and keep sinning!

If you look through some of these Mercenaries magazines (maybe some even on the web), you will find that some groups offer "training camp" in places like Georgia and upstate New York (among other places). These camps are quite military (often run by retired military personnel), open to everybody and vey tough.

Being tough is 40% physical and 60% mental.
Many Spec Ops personnel train for years to pass the respective training, Just remember If you ain't dead you can keep pushing.
