I believe that depression doesn't necesarily cause laziness, but you just don't really feel like doing anything. All the things you used to enjoy don't bring you that much joy anymore. And it can definitely can keep you from going out in the world and work.

At its extreme it can cause you to stay motionless in bed. At a lesser degree, it does make you apathic - you lose interest in things and people that just recently excited you and were important. You just don't care anymore, you have no motivation. If it is depression, you are also very likely to feel guilty because of "laziness" and lack of impetus to act. I hope you don't have it. Being down can be similar to depression, but it lasts much shorter. When it lasts for several weeks or months, it is best to see the doctor.

A follow up question could be, "Can laziness cause depression?"
But, to answer your question. Yes, from the point of view of an outsider, a depressed person could be mistaken for a lazy person.

yes is the short answer
depression is debilitating because it can make just ordinary everyday activities feel 10 times more difficult with less energy
so a person with more than mild depression can actually be making a far bigger effort to do things with a far less effective result - hence to someone who has never had depression it can look like laziness.
there are many medications that can help someone thus afflicted and if they are so then a doctors advice asap is needed

Most definitely. Depressed people often feel paralyzed to do anything at all. It is very common to want to stay holed up in bed all day and have zero desire to go to work, school, outside, etc., even though they know that would be the logical thing to do. It is very hard to "just do" something when one is very depressed.

Depression usually results in reduced activity, whether social or otherwise. It doesn't mean you're lazy. It's just a symptom of depression which is serious enough by itself.

You are correct, Been there done that. You just need to make your self go out enough to meet someone you are intrested in and you will find that you will want to go and can't wait to hear from that person. I started out by going to clubs and trying to be happy till I started meeting women and that took that depressed feeling away really fast.

definitely . depression can cause laziness. when most people are depressed, they have low self esteem , not think highly of themselves. they devalue themselves and devalue whatever belongs to them.
when you devalue yourself, you devalue your time which will cause you to spend your time lazily and unproductively.
if you valued yourself and your time more, you would not be so lazy. and if you weren't so lazy you'd be less depressed. see the cycle? no stop being lazy and just do it:)
you deserve to treat yourself well. right?
