Ok Holden is Australian's GM division..... The pontiac GTO is based a Holden design (don't know if they are made down under also)

Ford owns many car companies including the partial share of Mazda , but also owns Volvo, Jaguar, Austin Martin, and Land Rover

Most of the newer cars Ford has out are based on Volvo and Mazda ideas and platforms.

Ford was in aliance with Nissan in the 1990s building a joint vehicle called the Mercury Villager/Nissan Quest.

As someone said about other automakers buying up Ford.... The Koreans have too many problems and money issues, Nissan has some financial pains if I remember leaving Honda and Toyota.

Both would probably rather not deal with a company of the size of Ford. Mercedes is having numerous issues still with it's merger with Chrysler in the 1990s.. and they have makes no one knows they own (like Frieghtliner,Western Star, and the Thomas School bus company).. It was the first major merger of it's kind in something like 30 years and this one featured too many lessons learned for others to even try IMO.

Ford does have a habit of trying to traditionalize style it's cars more than some of the other makers however.

They would only join or merge for one reason:

PROFITS!

They own quite a few european and japanese makers so they are already doing it (if that is your question?). It is always a win win situation. Ford can utilize and profit from different car markets besides the mainstream ones in the US. Another side beneifit is that any technology obtained from the merges can be utilized by the ford automakers in the US (there are already a lot of japanese components in ford cars).

In the end the boundaries between the modern car is getting more blurred every day. There isn't going to be an "us" versus "them" anymore because all the cars made in the future will have similar parts from the same companies.

Ford got the leftovers that the Germans (BMW and VW) did not want. Thank Go for that can you imagine no Mini in the US market, Rolls Royce and Bentley would have been long gone. Fords only hope is that maybe a Korean or Japanese car line will buy them because the Germans defiantly don't want to be caught up in Fords poor quality and design. Hell they even took the Mazda 6 a fairly nice car and put the old green led instrumentation readouts and grandpa looking center stack in the Zephyr,Milan,Fusion.
