The observer has no choice but to wonder at the usage of gilded panels interspersed with his paintings of fanciful fabrics and haunting, evocative faces. Though there is argument for Klimt's work to be described as cubist, I feel that cubism is merely a tool which synthesizes the influence of Russian Orthodoxy's gilded iconoclasts. In traditional iconography, the gilding is used to focus the viewer on the face of a saint or on the action being memorialized, such as The Resurrection. In Klimt's works, the gilded panels are used to conceal certain pieces of information in the composition, occasionally drawing attention away from the intended action.

Klimt was brilliant. I love the idea that he first painted the female forms nude, then clothed them. Makes ya wonder what's under there... the fascination is in the layers upon layers of mystery. Ever seen his drawings? Delicious!
PS, nice soliloquy, Lokey

Gustav Klimt is a fabulous painter...
The Kiss and his Woman & child are magnificent, as is everything else he has painted.
His use of gilt areas mixed in with the oil paints is superb...

His paintings are beautiful and creepy at the same time. The way his figures often appear emaciated puts him in a catagory all his own. Most female figures in art are somewhat plump! (I wonder if his models really looked like that!?) I read that he had nude women hanging aroud his studio waiting to pose when he needed them.
I love his use of decoration. One of his best friends owned a dress making business and had access to fantastic fabrics. I think this is where he got some of his inspiration.
I really admire him for doing his "own thing!"

I love the picture of him and his cat. haha those crazy Austrians. I also find the choice of biblical figures he painted interesting. He seemed to really enjoy and admire women. I love the way he painted poppies. I love when his subjects have their eyes closed.

He's a real fun guy, always up for a laugh. But don't ever lend him money, or introduce him to your sister.
