My parents said I had my binky all the way until I was 3, but at that point they decided I was getting too old, so they took it away one day, threw it out and told me something like the binky went bye bye or they lost it.
I would say 2-3 is a good age to take it away. You have to consider at 4 they're starting pre-school and it's going to make schooling very difficult if they're still having a pacifier at that age, you know? I think 6 months - 1 year is way too early to take it away. They're still crawling and learning to walk for crying out loud. They shouldn't have their binky taken away THAT early. What else are they going to have?

Each of my three kids were different. My oldest was a little over a year old, my second was almost 3 and my baby was a little over the 2 1/2 mark. Each had different reasons for giving it up. As a counselor I have seen the result of people who take the "binky" away and have problems forever. A pacifier is a source of comfort in unfamiliar or uncomfortable situations...it's a soother, familiar plus it has a ton of benefits. Keeping a bink too long is bad because it can deform the palate of the mouth, which later has to be repaired with braces. Kids usually give you the hint they are ready to quit. Let nature take care of it and quit listening to people who don't think a bink is necessary. I know better! Really.

I dont have a child, but when I was a baby I didnt even have a pacifier. My grandmother came to the hospital and took pictures of me and she took the pacifier out of my mouth for them and I never put it back in. I guess I figured "You took it out, Im not putting it back in!!" I'm sure my mother didn't like that. lol

My son breast fed for 8 months. He threw his pacifier away when he was nine months old. I did not take the pacifier away from him.

Hello I'm a mother of 3, My oldest is 3 my middle child he's 2 and my youngest just turned 1 and I took the binker away as soon as that first tooth appeared. It's going to be hard but once they realize that it's not coming back they get over it.

You know, it is funny. I remember that I was very concerned about it, but now I really don't remember. I do remember that as he was premature, I tended to give him a bottle instead. He was anxious to start drinking from a cup, so probably the next time he lost the pacifier, i just didn't replace it.

Neither of my kids ever used a pacifier...Thank God...Simple soloution: Babies don't miss something that was never there. Don't introduce a pacifier to your child and you will never have to break the habit.

my oldest daughter took a "binky" She had it till she was almost 3 years old. We used the "Binky Fairy" we told her that the binky fairy came to little kids houses when they were too big for binkies and they take the nipple and leave a big kid toy in it's place. So we gathered all the binkies one week and threw out all but one. one night when she went to bed we snuck in and took the binky. the next morning the nipple of the binky was cut off and the plastic part was sitting on the counter next to the big girl toy she never asked for it again.
