go to a health store, and buy melatonin. the sub-lingual (put-it-under-your-tongue-and-it-melts-away) works best, because you'll be concentrating on it melting away, and you'll be asleep by the time it's done.

if one doesn't work, try two. 5mg is the highest you want to go.

Try exercising during the day. This will get your body moving, blood pumping, and generally just get your body more tired throughout. Also, remove anything "entertaining" from your bedroom including televisions, etc because these can distract you from getting the sleep you need.
If your a light sleeper, it may also help to get mood music or the nature sounds because that will create a nice and soothing environment.
Drink a nice cup of warm milk and make sure not to do anything too stressful or strenuous prior to going to bed. Watch tv for 30 mins or just lounge around talking to an old friend on the phone/computer.
MAKE SURE TO Relax...anything that you can possibly be worried about tonight can DEFINITELY be solved in the morning.

eat healthy, don't eat anything after 7 unless it's a very small portion and healthy. excerising helps too. the more active you are in the day, the better you will sleep.
i have the EXACT same prob. and the reason not to eat before you go to bed is because it somehow makes you have weird/unusual dreams. and sometimes that causes you to wake up at night. plus, go to the bathroom BEFORE you go to bed. and also, try to sleep in a COMPLETELY SILENT AND DARK ROOM.

Try some lavender linen spray...it is supposed to be very relaxing.

Calm yourself down with some deep breathing...just listen to the sound of your breath and try to not think about anything but listening to your own breath.
