The answer is yes you must be able to swim.
You will be required to preform three (3) different swimming techniques, and remain afloat (head above water in one spot) for 30 min. Just to qualify for BUDS.

............??Minimum time to serve in the NAVY??............
Min. time to sign up for active duty 4years.
Min. time before trying out for SEALs :
from just after arriving at boot camp to the day you leave.

It would help once they stick you 5 miles out in the ocean so that you can swim to shore.

You can get a 2 year hitch however there is no schooling involved. I think you have to be in 4 years to get some technical schooling.

It would help to know how to swim as they put more emphasis on how not to drown. Check out the Discovery Channel's series on Seal training, BUDS classes and Hell Week.

1.) I would think it would come in handy if you intend to storm a beach by yourself, at night, against stiff emplacements that fire bullets extremely quickly and voluminously.

2. ) They'll teach you everything, and anything. In order to keep you from being an inert, bypassing piece of flotsam.

3. ) I think it's four active, two reserve. Want'cha ta get used to the smell of different types of sea water.

It would be helpful if you did know how to swim, but I suppose that if you didn't that they would teach you.
My brother was in the navy for 30 years.

They teach you to swim in basics but if you cannot swim you probably won't get accepted to SEALS you can try to get into SEALS at basic.

Don't even worry about swimming. Unless you can spend an hour in ice cold water don't even think about it.
