Or any other tips so I don't end up just throwing the cat outside for good.

Double sided tape. Put it on everything the cat jumps on. They absolutely HATE it and, sooner or later will remember it. It's also fun to watch!

Here's my answer to a question about declawing, which also may help you. The process of declawing is not really a matter of taking the claws out or off....they take the top knuckle of each...like removing your top joint that has your fingernail on it so you won't have fingernails. It is hard on any cat, but especially on a cat of any weight, since they have to walk on them and jump down from chairs. It is better to use a spray bottle of water and surprise them with a quick spray when they start to shred things. There is also a spray "Four Paws -Keep Off" that you can apply to items that you want them to leave alone. Vets can also apply tips to each claw that prevent them from using their claws. They are not permanent, and may need to be replaced, but after they have worn them for a while they may stop trying. Make sure you have a carpet covered post and a catnip scratching box. If they have the right toys they often leave your stuff alone! I have had many cats and only one was declawed. He would use a laundry basket and a cane seated chair to "claw" since he could get the ends of his toes in the holes. He walked like he was stomping around. I never did that to a cat again...and we've had four since then and with plenty of toys they have left our furniture and our log home walls alone.

you can go to any grocery store that has a pet section and get a spray called stop scratch. you spray it on whatever you dont want scratched. the smell keeps them from going near that area. at first humans smell it strong but after 5 minutes you wont smell it. your cat on the other hand will smell it for about 2 weeks. after 2 weeks if your cat scratches again spray again. after a couple times your cat will just leave that spot alone and you wont have to spray any more. works great, i've used it in the past. good luck

I vote scratching post. It's much easier to divert cat behavior than stop it. If the cat doesn't play with the post, try encouraging him with catnip rubbed on it, or keeping his toys by it. There are sprays, but they only work so well, and it's not really a solution, as it's normal behavior to sharpen their claws like that. He'll just find something else to scratch, including your carpet.

This may sound a little gross, but I've done this before, and it has always worked.

If you sit and observe the cat, it will always walk up and sniff the area it intends to scratch, before the claws come out.

Take a small amount of your ear wax, and rub it on the problem area. People will not be able to smell it, but your cat will, when he/she sticks their nose right up to it. That piece of furniture is now marked with YOUR scent, a personal "keep away" sign.

I've been told that if you rub the peel of an orange after you take it off the orange onto the furniture that is supposed to help. I have the same problem with my cat scratching on my furniture .... I should try this to see if it works.

There are products, scratching posts galore, and contraptions I have no idea why they bothered to invent.
No your cat will scratch, no matter what. It's natural.
My cat Franklin, still pretends to scratch, even though his front claws have been removed. It's hilarious to watch now. I just let him rub-away.
He is an inside cat. SO.... Please, don't throw out your cat. Just have it declawed' front claws only. It doesn't cost that much.

there is some spray stuff you can get at petco that works alright, you can put double sticky tape on the couch where they like to scratch.
