Why on earth would you give a 5 Yr old an allowance?
the child is 5.. anything that your kid needs you can get... I let my son go to the store with me and pick out a new toy or something from the dollar store and thats his "allowance" I wouldnt give the child money... and if you do, only enough for a bag of chips or something... Are you getting the child to do anything for this allowance such as "help" sweep the floor or put his/her toys away? Kids need a sense of ownership of this money. not just to think that mommy or daddy just hands it over when i want it... is the allowance monthly or weekly? if weekly no more the 2 or 3 dollars....Wow...I didnt get an allowance when i was 5....

I use the $0.50/year/week. So my 5 year old get $2.50/week and my 2 year old gets $1/week. This seems to be a good system, they have to save for larger items, but if they want to spend right away there is enough for something small.

I noticed that there are a lot of people saying that a child this age does not need an allowance, my kids do not get any toys or candy from us except at Christmas and birthdays. They spend their own allowance on things they want. We are leaving for vacation next week and even my two year old has saved $20 spending money to take with her. My son often saves for months for a special toy that he wants. There is no better time than when they are young to teach them to be responsible with money, which is what an allowance is for. Both of my kids do chores around the house in the same way my husband and I do, because we are a family and everyone works together to keep the house. Allowance and chores are used to teach two different lessons and should not be mixed.

My daughter is 4 years old and I give her a dollar for every day that she cleans her room or pickes up her toys and mess from her play room and living room. Make a calender and for everyday that he/she cleans up his/her mess put a star or some kind of sticker on that day and at the end of the week count with him/her how many stickers they have, then give them that amount of money.

Some people think a dollar per year is appropriate-- so a 5 year old would get $5.
I think anywhere around $3-$5 is good.

Good question, well if the child does a few simple chores to earn the money, then i would say........5 bucks a week. As long as they are aware that they have to earn it. they can to simple things like pick up there toys, clear the table after breakfast, put there shoes away,,,,you know those kinds of things!!!

I would say $1 a day so a week $7....if you think that's too less then try $2 a day I wouldn't give 'em a lot seeing they dont need too buy much but it does teach them responsibility & how to spend a $ wisely.....and I suppose a liitle math too:)

Nothing, make him do chores and pay him as he goes, a dollar here and a dollar there. That is what I do. If the boy wants money he knows he must work for it. Just like real life. They need to learn the fact early that people just don't get money for doing nothing.
