Assuming that you live in the USA I would suggest that learning Thai would not benefit you very much. It is a "Tonal" language which means that unless you have an unusual facility with language or have been exposed to Thai since childhood it will be difficult to even hear the subtle differences in words. The king of Thailand, who was born in the USA, has tried for many years to incorporate English into the school system with little success. Recent changes in the world position of Thailand has encouraged more Thais to learn Chinese. At the time Thai was declared the official language of Thailand there were more Chinese speaking people there than Thai speaking. It is a beautiful and friendly country and if you ever have an opportunity to visit there you should do so.

whoa whoa whoa there, kiddo. First of all, Thailand's not poor and it IS a beautiful country. You should be proud that you're half Thai. And second of all, you should learn Thai because it's gonna help a lot when you visit Thailand or something. Take it from me, I'm half Thai half American too and the last time I went back, people thought that I couldn't speak Thai because I look American but when I spoke to them in Thai with no accent what so ever, everyone were amaze. So yes, you should learn Thai and don't look down on Thai people.

Hi, my guess is that you are living in the USA and you have not visited Thailand yet?

Well, I think there is much you do not know and understand about your heritage. Try not to judge the country by its physical wealth. Thailand is rich in things that other countries are envious of.

For a start, Thailand is rich in natural beauty. It beach resort is listed as among the top 10 holiday destinations in the world, and it is the only Asian country to achieve this fame.

Thailand is rich in its customs and culture. The traditional way of life is preserved through teaching the children when they are young so that you find that all Thais have a common identity. They are taught cultural dance and songs, so this run in every Thai's blood. Thailand is among the few country in the region that has managed to do so, even while the country is undergoing modernisation.

Among the Indo-chinese nations, thailand can be said to be the most modern. So the life in the big city is not going to be very much different from what you are doing now.

Anothing thing Thailand is very rich in is its people. It is one of the friendliest and hospitable people in the world and many who had travelled there can attest to this. You have to visit to know them.

It seems like you do not know theThai history very well. Thailand had fought quite a few wars with her neighbours in the past. Especially Burma and Cambodia. If you visit Thailand, you can see these countries influence in the architecture.

And Thailand fought to drive these invaders out. Not onlythe military, even the common people also got involved. There are folk lores of bravery and heroic acts of the Thai people in defending their land. And all these happened before the World War. If you try to learn about Thai history, you will find that even the Queen fought alongside her King in the battles. That is the kind of love bond that keeps the country together.

As to the Second World War, Thailand allowed the Japanese to pass through the country mainly so as to preserve the people. The King did not want his people to suffer unnecessarily and with the agreement, the Thais need not fight at all. So, it was his people interest in mind that Thailand did not fight in the war. I think it is best that you learn more about your home country, you may get to like it more.

So, bottomline, you have a rich heritage behind you as a Thai. Learning the beautiful language will help you to understand the custom and tradition better, because many things in Thai cannot be translated effectively into English. If you still think Thailand is not cool, I think there will be millions who will disagree with you. You should be proud of your background. Have an open mind to learn more about it yourself.

I am just a farang (foreigner) who happens to like that country very much.

Actually, Thailand is pretty rich compared to the countries around it. China has a lot more poor people and social issues then Thailand. China is also communist; communism is not cool. If Thailand was attacked, they wouldn't give up. Historically, they are very vicious fighters when protecting their own territory. They have good relations with world powers so they'd get support.

I think you should learn Thai. For one, it will double your income to be bilingual. It's fun to speak another language your friends can't understand. And it's part of your family history.

You have Thai roots, so for you it will not be too difficult to learn Thai.
Although you can manage in Thailand with English, you will have to learn anyway the way the Thais speak English. This is almost like learning a new language.
In your case (being half Thai) I would advise to learn Thai instead.
Sooner or later you will want to visit Thailand and your visit will be much easier and pleasant if you speak the language.

I am from the USA and living in Thailand. I am learning to speak Thai because it gives me insight into the thinking of Thai people and lets me enjoy their great sense of humor and fun. Whether or not it is for you - is totally up to you. Thai is not going to be as valuable for business as Chinese or Japanese might be - or, if you are living in the USA, it is not as practical as learning Spanish. Thai is only spoken here and parts of Laos that tap into Thai Tv..

If you are curious about your heritage, then learning Thai will be an important part of knowing about this side of you. Thai people are unique and special [ and in my opinion way cooler than almost anyplace I have ever been ] - You should really discuss this with your Thai parent - - and best of luck to you - you come from a proud and wonderful culture.

Dear Katrina, I'm surprised your mother didn't teach you Thai when you were a baby. Why don't you give it a try? You might like it. If you don't you can learn something else. Learning a language, any language, will help you learn any other language. It's like playing an instrument. If you can play piano, it's easier to learn guitar, or saxophone, you see? At your age, you should try lots of different things to see what suits you. I wish you the best of luck with whatever you decide. B
