what you are talking about is split personalities and schizophrenia is not the same.
A split personalities is very rare like in the book Sybil where she had 17 personalities and it was caused by emotional trauma where a "different" person emerged because it was too hard for them to cope due to stress - abuse-
Schizophrenia is a genetic disease in your brain that sets off a chemical imbalance causing someone to lose touch with reality and hear voices or have paranoid thoughts and it is very scary for them - it happens in your late teens and you can take medication to help a lot of these symptoms.

People who have Schizophrenia suffer mainly from delusions and often have hallucination but not multiple personalities. Multiple Personality Disorder, often called Dissociative identity disorder, is when people have one or more personalities or "people" other than their own.

The person usually doesn't know about the others and they often have memory loss when the other personality takes over. The person suffering from dissociation does not completely disengage from their reality, they appear to have multiple personalities. In other words, they have different "people" to deal with different situations.

People can begin to suffer from multiple personalities to deal with a childhood trauma, anxiety or any number of things. Dissociation is highly controversial and difficult to diagnose.

You're talking about Multiple personality disorder. Schizophrenia has nothing to do with having many personalities.

You can read a lot of information about Multiple personality disorder, including potential causes, on this website: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multiple_personality_disorder#Potential_causes_of_dissociative_identity_disorder
