What is the best color to dye or highlight JET BLACK natural (african-american) hair?

I have light skin with very very dark black hair and I am unsure what is the best color to compliment my skintone. I was considering a dark red color but I am not sure it will show up because my hair is so dark. Any suggestions? What is the advantage of highlights vs. dye?

high light it with a burgundy almost purple. I think that is beautiful! I have brown hair with blonde highlights, but so does everyone! If you have a natural black color you I would stick with a darker highlight too unless you want a high contrast. I say go for a purple family color. it would look gorgeous!

Jet Black Hair With Highlights

Jet black hair is extremely hard to lift. I wouldn't suggest that you use any type of box kits that you do at home, because dying your hair causes so much damage. When your hair is just jet black you have to start off gradually with color. For example, start with a dark brown, then a light brown, add some highlights, etc. etc. Get it? Chances are if you go from dark to light your hair is going to fall out or be extremely damaged. Red is also a hard color unless you already have a lightner in your hair. So your not going to able to go red like you wanted to....

You know, 15 years ago highlighted hair was all the rage. I'm 42 and am so sick and tired of attractive and unattractive girls doing stuff to their hair. Just let it be natural, and believe it or not, you will be different and to a lot of people now, not boring. Leave the color as it is, if it needs trimmed or something else, go ahead, but don't mess with the natural beauty that you already have.

i have Jet black hair too and i'm afr am. the colors won't show up on your hair. you can bleach it but it weakens the hair tremendously. The best thing to to do is to go with a glaze. I use a clear or black/blue glaze. Makes my hair look like it has diamonds in it in the light. It's shiny and healthy looking. You can use a red glaze, but they really don't show up that much.

Your hair will be hard to color because it is so dark. Whatever you decide, (I suggest a brown hue), make sure you see a professional.

I have brown curly hair and I have Blonde highlights. Perhaps you should try lighter blonde, that might look better than brown, dark brown just looks kind of trashy.
