I read somewhere that it grows in South America and hangs from a tree and is called the cashew apple. Also, you never see a cashew with a shell !

YES, THE CASHEW IS A NUT, THE SHELL IS TOXIC.

Cashews do grow on the bottom of the "fruit". THe reason you never seem then in a nut, other than on the actual tree, is because they have to be processed before you can eat them. There is a deadly chemical in the shell ( I think ) and if not done correctly, you die.

cashew nuts and cashew apples are not the same thing. the apples aren't what people eat--they're a pseudofruit--the nuts are where the flava is ;)

Yes it is indeed a nut, it has a shell you have to break open :] Mmm cashews I love em but they make me get coldsores.. am allergic.. alas.

yes they are a nut. they are also good. it's in a shell you brake open. if you go to the flee market you can get them anyway you want. hot, spicy, etc.
